With the straight-thru design, grind retention is very low and again right up there with the best in the business at around half a gram - and it’s often less than that depending on factors like bean type and ambient humidity. A built-in convertible holder allows you to grind directly into your portafilter, the supplied grounds bin, or most of the popular brewing devices (Hario, Clever, Able Kone) – a standout feature among all other home grinders.

So with this, you don’t need to set the time again and again, which takes additional time; you have to press the button and it starts grinding according to your preferences. All the Sette grinders share the same 40 mm “S1” conical steel burrs made by the Swiss burr manufacturer Etzinger. The Virtuoso+ does have a nifty set of LED lights inside the grinds bay, for lighting up the amount of grinds caught in its bin. In a way, it needs it because of the enclosed design; it also works nicely lighting up your portafilter when you grind directly into it using Baratza’s optional portaholder. This option isn’t really needed on the Sette 30 because of the open design of the grinder. After all, it’s hard to find entry-level grinder espresso grindersthat don’t have some sort of compromise. As a professional coffee taster (Q Grader), I have tested a bunch of burr grinders. Currently, I have more than two dozen grinders at home, but I have tried many more models in my time as a coffee geek.

At the same time, the new and improved scale in the ‘Wi’ is now delivered by the digital scale experts from Acaia. The housing of the Baratza Sette 270 is predominantly plastic, but don’t let that put you off – it’s what you’d expect for a grinder in this price range. It keeps both the cost and the weight down, with all of the Sette grinders weighing the same or less than the brand’s entry-level models. The Sette is extremely loud. So if you’re sensitive to noise or you share home with somebody who is, don’t get this grinder. The Sette Series is designed with a small footprint (like our other models) that fits under standard kitchen cabinets.

So for most burr grinders, whenever coffee is ground, some grinds will remain either in the grinding chamber or the feeding channel. This negatively impacts the flavor of the next brew (as some of the grinds will be old) and means that whenever you change the grind setting, you need to purge out 10-15g of grinds. This can be a pain, especially in a home setup, resulting in more waste, especially when dialing in for espresso. Whether you’re looking for a hopper-based grinder or a single-doser, there are some other strong options on the market.
