About this deal

And the things I haven’t tried, because they are in the higher-end cameras, not in my Olympus PEN PL9. The zoom ring of the Olympus covers too much surface on the lens. There is not much room to hold the lens without touching the zoom ring. This is certainly no big problem to most people, but I did not like it. And it turns the wrong way (I own mostly Panasonic zoom lenses ;-). Many of my readers are here because of travel photography, so I decided to start making posts about photo gear. It is not a “classic” review about specs and sharpness (etc.). Professional reviewers have time, resources, and the audience for that. Instead, I will share my thoughts about the gear and what it can add to your travel photography. All images in my review are retouched. Super-telephoto lenses in travel photography

That being said the Olympus 75-300-II is sharper than the Panasonic 100-300 because it doesn't have the moving OIS unit inside. Overall neither is particularly sharp at 300mm. There are a few too many M.Zuiko lenses to cram into a single guide, and they cater for a multitude of purposes and user types, so we've split our guide into four sections: You have to keep it in mind when making the shot. There is a fox, I guess it is hiding from me. I am of the far end of the zoom, but this isn’t enough. Cropping wouldn’t help, there are not enough details. At this point, I would like to introduce the Olympus 75-300mm. It is one of the lower-end lenses. It costs around 350 Eur but can be found cheaper (I got it for 250). Paired with one of Olympus’s cameras (OMD M5 mark II for instance), you get an inexpensive stabilized 600mm full-frame equivalent. I don’t think there is another way of getting it that cheap. If we keep cropping in mind, Canon’s old, but outstanding 300mm f4 IS sells for around 1000 Eur and weights a just bit more than 1 kg.

Set your camera on a tripod or secure it in place by some other means. Set the zoom to 75mm and start slowly zooming all the way to 300mm, while looking at the live view (magnified view might be helpful here). Do note if during the zooming the image moves around additionally to being magnified. If it does by anything more than a small amount (the barrel might wiggle a bit when operating a zoom ring), then you have a broken lens, return it. The lens features a standard external zooming mechanism, so the barrel extends while zooming towards the longer end. When fully extended, the 75-300mm gains about 2 inches in length. The Olympus 75-300mm II at 75mm (left) and 300mm (right) Around the Lens: Handling, Operation and AutofocusIn addition, the 100-300 (at least my copy) had to be stopped down to 7.1 for acceptable sharpness toward the long end whereas my 75-300 does well already wide open.
