About this deal

When a fast moving vehicle passing from a straight path suddenly negotiates a horizontal curve is termed as Superelevation.

Instead of having them plum, I'd tilt the top maybe a degree and a half, perhaps more, and when the splines were attached they adopted the correct super-elevation. Superelevation on the horizontal curve is one of the most important features in the construction of the roads. I didn't know that about the inner rail height staying the same on the prototype, or that the inch elevation is almost equal to the tilt angle. Firstly, the camber on the outer edge is eliminate gradually till the road pavement has one straight tilt or slope from the inner to the outer edge (Elimination of crown method). I think a better way is to mount the roadbed on subroadbedon risers and tilt them to create the superelevation. The centrifugal force is opposed by the corresponding value of the friction developed and by a component of the force of gravity due to the Superelevation is provided. When the transverse inclination providing to the pavement surface on curves by raising the outer edge with respect to inner edge to counter act the centrifugal force. In other words don't worry about it, if you raised the outer end of tie 5 inches the grade of the inner rail would raise about an inch or well within toy train tolerances. What I did is start the height adjustment right before entering the curve with a slight elevation increase every 2-inches.

Superelevation is expressed as the height of the outer edge of the pavement with respect to the width of the pavement.Certainly with high speeds and modern equipment more superlevationis appropriate but not in thetransiitionera particularly if there are grades involved. I definitely agree with the comments that too little is better than too much and using risers you can always go back and tweak things. The motion of trains easing in and out of the curves added a lot of enjoyment, but as stated earlier, less is more!

At the end of the straight portion of the road curve, which is also the beginning of the transition curve, there is a provision of usual camber to the road surface. The principle of introducing super elevation lies in the gradual changing of this camber surface at the start of the transition curve to a one way slope. The rate of change in superelevation is found by dividing the difference between normal crown and full super by the transition length. It helps the fast-moving vehicles to safely pass through the curved portion of the roads with stability. Once the glue has dried on the shims (careful to only apply glue to where the shim will be wanted to stay - within the roadbed's inner and outer curves), we use a Dremel with a cutting wheel to take off the excess shim on the outside as the curve starts and ends.

For faster track the dynamic effects take over; you have to gently roll the cars into and out of the superelevation. Some guys wanted a higher elevation to make a more spectacular scene, but running at scale speeds (and much higher! Superelevation is the transverse slope provided to counteract the effect of centrifugal force and reduce the tendency of the vehicle to overturn and to skid laterally outwards by raising the pavement outer edge with respect to the inner edge.
