I have little belief in what brands claim, it's just marketing. In my view you shouldn't be wearing down unless you fully accept that the birds used to make your clothing have died after a horrific existence. The down is ethically sourced and RDS-certified, and it is hydrophobic, being treated with Alpkit's 'Downtek' treatment. Along with the DWR this allows a degree of insurance against damp affecting the insulation. On the ethical front, Alpkit only use RDS-certfied down, which may come as a pleasant surprise in a relatively budget offering.During our tests, this felt luxuriously warm and incredibly lofty. It’s like wearing a big down sleeping bag. The material felt a little on the brittle side, but it still held up throughout a testing period. Starting at the top, the Resolute features a fully adjustable, helmet compatible hood with a stiffened peak. Hood adjustability is taken care of with drawcords, meaning a nice snug fit can be achieved both with and without a climbing helmet in place. It can also be rolled away when not required. That got us thinking though, that we’re looking at every possible item from Montane so it would be good to narrow our search down even further and only look at Montane branded products within the Insulated category. The cost of Montane Insulated When buying Insulated, the quality of the product is going to be one of the factors that you really scrutinise before you commit to buying. When it comes to cut Arc'teryx really have worked their magic, passing the basic 'lift test' with flying colours - i.e. raise your arms to climb and the hem simply doesn't lift. In this review, that's a rare accolade. Weight aside, this is what we liked most about it: it just fits. This makes climbing in it feel like a dream, simply because it's akin to wearing a warm, fitted fleece. That said, it does size accordingly and a Medium is definitely on the snug side of the spectrum.

During our tests, we found that this had quite a boxy shape to it, but it felt very warm and comfortable. The outer shell fabric is a little on the thin side, though it still held up to our test period. It’s a shame that Klattermusen don’t make a version of this with a hood too. Full Specifications Ever since, I've found myself wondering about the overall 'kindest' insulation to use in an overall sense, along the lines that if the down is a by product anyway, it would seem to make sense for it to be given a useful purpose, compared to oil being used to make an insulation which can seem to degrade with use faster than down does, and which won't naturally rot or degrade and would need to be recycled or burnt as fuel to stop it from becoming landfill. There’s a clever baffle construction too including stitched-through baffles on the arms where more articulation and dynamic movement is required and box wall baffles on the body where maximum loft and warmth is wanted. It’s clever stuff and it works excellently. What’s more, the box wall baffles are all offset, further reducing the chance of any cold spots. Increased demand and a need for profit on animal products does not yield ideal conditions for animal welfare. When it comes to cut it's made with walking in mind, not climbing or scrambling, as there's a whole lot of hem lift when moving your arms above your head. This puts it at the less technical end of the spectrum, more for casual recreational use, summit stops on hillwalking days and general hanging out than for anything technical.

The downside to buying online is that you can’t actually get hold of the product to try it out first.

It’s mainly stuffed with 850 fill power responsibly sourced down but there’s also synthetic fill strategically placed in areas that are more prone to moisture, including the cuffs, shoulders and armpits. RDS: This means Responsible Down Sourcing. It’s a certification that down has been procured through methods that prioritise the welfare of the animals and the environment. To give that price some context we then looked at all of the products available from Go Outdoors in the Insulated category. We found 48 items in total. What’s the price of Insulated?

It could only be improved if they made the hood a little bit more insulated and made the main zip two-way. Full Specifications The material the product is made from is often a sign of the quality for Insulated. Take a look at the product details over at Go Outdoors to get a feel for this. Our testers found that it offered excellent warmth for weight, thanks to its high-quality 700FP down fill. It works well as a standalone outer layer in cold, dry conditions, with a fit that will accommodate layers underneath. Having said that, it’s not so bulky that you couldn’t also wear it underneath a shell if required too. Commendably, Montane use ethically sourced down throughout their down range, and claim to be the first brand in the world to commit to the Responsible Down Standard across their entire catalogue. All of the lovely warm down is wrapped in a PEAQ down lining that is comfortable next to skin, is highly breathable and fast drying.
