About this deal

We love the charming and funny illustrations, ghoulish puns and jokes and the wonderfully inventive magical creatures from mischievous caticorns to unicorn lords and terrifying angel-kittens. And the gripping adventures will help keep your attention too! Kids’ entertainment specialist Cake is partnering with DCM Pictures and Boulder Media on 2D adventure comedy series Amelia Fang, aimed at 6-9 year olds.

In book two, Amelia Fang and the Unicorn Lords, Amelia and her friends must brave the journey to the terrifying Kingdom of the Light to try to find Tangine’s missing mother, Queen Fairyweather. But with unicorns and angel-kittens lurking around every corner, who can they trust? And will they finally uncover the real villain keeping the kingdoms of Light and Dark as mortal enemies? Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball was Waterstones Book of the Month in October 2017. Amelia Fang would rather hang out with her pet pumpkin Squashy and her friends Florence the yeti (DON’T CALL HER BEAST!) and Grimaldi the reaper than dance at her parents’ annual Barbaric Ball. When the King’s spoiled son Tangine captures Squashy, Amelia and her friends must escape the party to plan a daring rescue! But they begin to realise things in Nocturnia may not be quite what they seem. The Amelia Fang books are written and illustrated by Laura Ellen Andersen, the illustrator of Witch Wars and creator of Evil Emperor Penguin. Laura describes Amelia as a modern-day Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family. The fun illustrations and lovable characters in Amelia Fang, make this series is perfect for readers 7+, especialy fans of The Worst Witch , Witch Wars or Isadora Moon . Not likely,” Countess Frivoleeta said. “He hasn’t stepped outside the palace since the fairy incident.” She looked at her husband. “Drakey, my awful little germinoid, you should really make more of an effort to see King Vladimir. You two used to be such good friends.” Join Amelia, Florence, Grimaldi, Pumpy and Tangine on the adventure of a lifetime in the fifth book of the series:In Amelia's second adventure, she and her friends Florence the yeti (DON'T CALL HER BEAST), Grimaldi the Death and Prince Tangine (reformed spoiled sprout), along with her pet pumpkin Squashy, must brave the journey to the terrifying Kingdom of the Light to try to find Tangine's missing mother, Queen Fairyweather. This made me quite sad since the book is meant for kids who are easily influenced by factors such the books they read and even though parents are not always "positive figures" they definitely shouldn't be antagonised in children's literature. I feel like Amelia's parents could have been written and portrayed in a much more positive way. Of course you have to go. You must learn the ropes so that you can carry on the Barbaric Ball tradition!” her mother said with a gleeful grin. But whilst exploring, Amelia and the gang stumble upon an ancient curse – and are shrunk to the size of bugs! How will they make the bloodcurdlingly BIG journey to break the curse when they are all so very TINY?

Amelia's father is portrayed as a selfish male figure that doesn't care about his family in the least. Throughout the whole book he is seen solving crossword puzzles instead of helping his wife with preparations for an event that is clearly important to her or helping his daughter in a complicated situation she finds herself in. There is a particular scene where Amelia is amazed because her father puts his own teacup into the sink:

Set in an unusual world full of eccentric characters, the series follows the funny adventures of a young vampire with a big heart, Amelia Fang, and her diverse gang of friends. Here, there are always wrongs that need righting, mysteries that need solving and creatures who need rescuing – but whatever the adventure, Amelia and her pals always manage to save the day in their own way. Amelia sighed as a ghost floated into the room, carrying a tray of something that looked like a pile of big boogies.
