About this deal

Small-holdings were grouped in communities which were expected to run agricultural production as cooperative market gardens, with materials bought and produce sold exclusively through the Association. All applicants were interviewed and given agricultural training before being assigned a property. The LSA Offices, where tenants’ accounts were managed and marketing of LSA produce took place, were accommodated in the same building. In the 1940s Edward Wiseman was the LSA accountant, prior to being book-keeper at Newbourne LSA. He left in 1952 to become accountant at Sidlesham LSA. I found it quite hard to focus on and the entire atmosphere of the book felt claustrophobic and dark.

Foxash Estate is in the ceremonial county of Essex, the historic county of Essex, and the administrative county of Essex. Ceremonial County I’m rating this a 4 star because even though I’m not crazy about it I think that’s because this isn’t really my preferred genre and it’s left me feeling a bit uncomfortable, but for lovers of this kind of thing I imagine that’s exactly the feeling they want to get from a book like this.If you think these details are out of date, then please let us know. Or if you'd like to take over editorial responsibility for this hall, please complete this form. About half-way through the book the author ramps up the tension. It becomes clear that Lettie isn’t just an anxious young woman: a shadow hangs over her, and she fears that some terrible event in the couple’s past will catch up with them and ruin their new lives. I felt much more engaged with the book at this point, hoping that whatever the mysterious issues were, they would be resolved. Then, just when it seemed that things were getting bad for the Radleys, they got worse! We understand that a cash bar is available at Foxash Social Club serving a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to hirers and their guests. Something about the book blurb on NetGalley made me think I would enjoy reading this book, and my thanks to the publisher for providing an ARC. As it turns out, it wasn’t quite what I was expecting and I don’t know whether that’s because I misread the description or because it was, as it felt to me, a different book to what was described.

It is almost claustrophobic in its detailed descriptions of the countryside, the oppressive heat of the greenhouse and the chill of winter mornings with the cry of foxes. Lettie’s world was never vast, but it has become much smaller: she never leaves the smallholding and seldom meets anyone other than her neighbours. As compensation she learns to observe nature and how it behaves in a way that she hasn’t previously, and we seldom would today. We witness the growth and transformation that envelops everything, even Lettie herself. Oh and there’s quite a lot of information about lettuces! I have to say firstly that if you have suffered miscarriage or baby loss then I'd definitely give this one a miss.* The Land Settlement Association (LSA) was a UK Government scheme set up in 1934 to re-settle unemployed workers from depressed industrial areas, particularly from North-East England and Wales. stars. This is a strange one and I’m not fully sure how I feel about it. I found the historical elements of this book to be really interesting and I liked learning about the LSA scheme. There were some great ideas and elements to this story that I really enjoyed such as Lettie’s past and the unsettling, claustrophobic atmosphere between the two holdings. However I just felt that none of the ideas ended up being executed in a satisfying way for me and I just felt really disconnected from the writing and characters throughout. I ended the book with a feeling that there was just something missing and I didn’t like how it was all wrapped up.
