About this deal

Surveyor tape measure: If your measuring needs exceed the ranges afforded by standard measures, then a surveyor tape is the way to go. With lengths of 30m and beyond, these flexible tapes excel at measuring long distances, especially outdoors, where you may struggle to bounce a laser measure. The standout of a cased tape measure is the distance the unsupported blade can extend before it bends or sags. As a general rule, a tape measure’s standout should be at least 7 or 8 feet, although many go further. With a rubbery outermolding, this tape measure is easy to grip and resistant to damage if dropped, although it might be a bit large for those with small hands. We tested both the 16-foot and 25-foot models and found this tape measure to be very easy to read, with big, bold markings on both sides of the blade. Measurements are indicated down to 1/16ths of an inch, with additional markings to show stud and joist spacings. The entire length of the 1-1/4-inch-wide blade is coated for sturdiness, but the first 6 inches have an additional rip-shield coating to ward off kinks or damage. The standout of the 16-foot version was around 12 feet and the 25-foot model was only slightly longer at around 13 feet in our tests. Long tapes' are exactly as described , tape measures which are usually 15-20m or more in length. Such tapes come in a variety of shapes and sizes for different trades and applications. Only you, the customer, can know exactly which one is right for you.

He adds, "For most people, a 25-foot option is great because it’s easy to store and long enough to handle most measuring tasks around the house. But if your space is small, a 16-foot tape measure is sufficient for most projects you’d need it for.” Tape measures that were intended for use in tailoring or dressmaking are called "sewing tape". They were made from flexible cloth or plastic, and are now made of fiberglass, which does not tear or stretch as easily. These types of tape measures are mainly used for the measuring of the subject's waist line and are usually 150 cm in length.Hiram A. Farrand Inc. (December 1930). Popular Science. The logic of using the millimetre in this context was that the metric system had been so designed that there would exist a multiple or submultiple for every use. Decimal fractions would not have to be used. Since the tolerances on building components and building practice would rarely be less than one millimetre, the millimetre became the sub-unit most appropriate to this industry. In this the industry was grateful to the SAA (now Standards Australia) for the early production of the Standard AS 1155-1974 "Metric Units for Use in the Construction Industry", which specified the use of millimetres as the small unit for the metrication upgrade. Most open reel tape measures feature an integral handle allowing them to be carried and wound out with more ease than a closed reel tape.

Find the closest cm marking and count the remaining number of mm markings to its right. For example, if there are 3 markings after 9 cm marking, then the measurement would be 9.3 cm. While dual scale tapes showing both inches and centimetres are sold, these are mainly imported low-cost items (since it would be a restriction of trade to not allow their importation).Linen or Cloth Tape is made of linen cloth with brass handle at zero end whose length is included in the tape length. It is very light and handy, but cannot withstand much wear and tear. So it cannot be used for accurate work. It is little used in surveying except for taking subsidiary measurements like offsets. Plastic tape measure (cm) Manually reeled tape measure Self-retracting metal tape measure (US customary) Measuring tape capable of measuring down to 1⁄ 32in (0.794mm) Diagram showing fractions of an inch on a standard sixteenth measuring tape Tapes are used in surveying for measuring horizontal, vertical or slope distances. Tapes are issued in various lengths and widths and graduated in a variety of ways. [23] Once all testing was completed, the testers assigned each tape measure a score of 1 to 5 in categories of accuracy, durability, ease of use, performance, and value. These scores were added to the testing results and the numbers were tabulated to choose the top-scoring tape measures. The metric units for linear measurement in building and construction will be the metre (m) and the millimetre (mm), with the kilometre (km) being used where required. This will apply to all sectors of the industry, and the centimetre (cm) shall not be used. … the centimetre should not be used in any calculation and it should never be written down". [22]

The measurements on the bottom of the image given below are in centimeters and millimeters. 10 millimeters make 1 cm, so there are 10 divisions between each centimeter. Each small division is equivalent to 1 mm. When looking at the given image, the first small mark after the 5 cm marking denotes a measurement of 51 mm which can also be referred to as 5.1 cm. I Never Thought I'd Have Gadget Lust for a Tape Measure, but Here We Are". Gizmodo. 23 March 2022 . Retrieved 15 March 2023. Fibreglass long tapes, however, usually come in an 'open reel' design where the blade is wound around a reel held together by an open frame. Closed Reel Tape Measures – AdvantagesCased tape measures are the most familiar type, and the type we tested at our lab. These tape measures have a retractable blade marked with imperial or metric measurements, and a case that’s made of plastic or metal. This type of tape measure is a must-have in your toolkit and is useful for most measuring tasks around the home. The Irwin Strait-Line is a top option for any tool collection. Most commonly, tape measures have numerals for inches and feet, and small lines to indicate fractions of inches. There are some, however, including the Milwaukee Compact Tape Measure, that actually indicate the fractions with numerals rather than lines, which can be much easier to read.

Public Buildings Service (September 1995). "Metric Design Guide (PBS-PQ260)" (PDF). U.S. General Services Administration. Short tapes may also feature a metallic belt clipto attach the tape onto the user’s belt. Some long tapes might also feature belt clips but this is generally reserved only for the shorter, more lightweight varieties. What type of tape should I be looking for? The first record of people using a measuring device was by the Romans using marked strips of leather, but this was more like a regular ruler than a tape measure.

The sale of dual Metric/US Customary scale measuring tapes is slowly becoming common in the United States. For example, in some Walmarts there are Hyper Tough brand tapes available in both US customary units and Metric units. Unlike US rulers, of which an overwhelming majority contain both centimeter and inch scales, tape measures are longer and thus traditionally have had scales in both inches and feet & inches. So, the inclusion of a metric scale requires the measuring device either to contain 3 scales of measurement or the elimination of one of the US Customary scales. Aside from a hammer and screwdriver, a tape measure is probably the most reached-for item in your toolkit. Michael DiMartino, Senior Vice President of Installations at Power Home Remodeling, says “I use tape measures all the time and store them in multiple locations throughout my home. You’d be amazed at how much you have to measure—especially now that we’re all relying more heavily on online shopping. Think about it; when you’re physically at a store and you’re looking at a piece of furniture, you can easily gauge with your eye whether or not it’s going to fit in your space or if it’ll even fit through your doorframe. But you can’t determine that as easily online." Tape measures are often designed for specific uses or trades. Tapes may have different scales, be made of different materials, and be of different lengths depending on the intended use. Tape measures can wind into a relatively small containers. The use of millimeter only tape measures for housing construction is a part of the US metric building code. [16] [17] This code does not permit the use of centimeters. Millimeters produce whole (integer) numbers, reduce arithmetic errors, thus decreasing wastage due to such errors. The US made measuring tape shown on the right is interesting in that it is a "Reverse Measuring Tape", where the measurements can be read from right to left just as well as they can be read when the tape is used from left to right. Tape measures frequently have a metal hook (or tang) at the end of the blade that can be hooked over whatever is being measured with measurements being taken from the end of the hook. The simple bottom hook points downwards while readings are taken off the tape from above just as other types of hooks enable measurements to be taken from a variety of angles. Hooks are usually connected to the tape with rivets; more rivets usually making for a stronger connection. Long tapes, by comparison, usually employ a folding hook or anchor that allows the tape to be pinned to the ground thus giving a stable point from which to measure. BELT CLIP
