About this deal

There were several things that Leto had never done in her life, nor dreamed of doing. But given that it seemed near certain that she would be dead by the evening, she abandoned any sense of self-preservation she had ever had. This is a gorgeous cover. Everything is shiny, making my inner crow happy. The colours are rich and complement each other well. I didn’t even notice the noose earrings until I was done reading the book and staring at the cover, trying to process everything I just read. I appreciate them and need a pair.

The tower stood atop a great hill. Leto could see the brown, sloping rooftops of Vathi, so near she could almost have reached out to touch them. Freedom was tantalizingly close; she could not let it escape her. Not when the alternative was to die like an animal, for a kingdom and its wretched royal family that deserved nothing from her. Not after they had failed her so badly. Not after they had failed her mother.

Melantho (the only character not original, but mentioned in the Odyssey), is another creature, human before, trapped on an island for three centuries. And then there's Mathias, the sweet and kind prince of Ithaca, condemned to be killed.

Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.) Apollo had not even deigned to grant her a vision of her own demise—the night before the guards had arrived to claim her, she had dreamed of a girl with golden hair and eyes like the sea. As for the setting and the retelling, there are names from the Odyssey, stories and myths from it, but the story could be set anywhere. Any kind of island, anywhere. There aren't so many descriptions, or anything distinctive at all. Queer retelling? Okay, fine. But where's the chemistry? also, “if [Penelope is] really that clever and manipulative, could she not have found a way out?” is such a stupid argument. she did “find a way out”! for twenty years she “found a way out”! it’s almost like Underwood doesn’t actually know anything about the cultural context of the time period! fancy that!!! Gorgeous, tragic, and timeless, Underwood's Lies We Sing to the Seamakes an age-old story feel new again. This is Greek tragedy at its best: sweeping in scope yet deeply intimate in characterization. This book will break your heart.- Grace Li (Sunday Times bestselling author of Portrait of a Thief)

Discussion

A wondrous tale of love, death, and sacrifice. The vivid characters give depth and adventure to a story with roots in classic Greek mythology.” — Natasha Bowen, New York Times bestselling author of Skin of the Sea Mathias, Prince of Ithaca, regrets the role he plays in blessing the marked girls before they are cut loose into the sea. Having lost a sister to the curse, he understands the anger of his people and the guilt of their deaths hangs (get it?) heavy on him. Mathias plans on breaking the curse, but he can’t do it alone. The characters are not so much developed, I couldn't see their growing or the chemistry between them. It felt a bit off, not as much as forced, but expected. It wasn't a great build up, many things were expected, as the jealous Mathias' friend, their bonding, or the ending. The Plague has left a population divided between Elites and Ordinaries—those who have powers and those who don’t; now, an Ordinary teen fights for her life.
