About this deal

It's a hell of a pre-credits hammer-blow, not just setting the tone but almost making the antics of the rest of the film positively tame by comparison.

If you do choose to stick it out, you find yourself in the company of a number of questionable individuals - celebrated Hollywood star Brad Pitt's Jack Conrad, aspiring starlet Margot Robbie's Nellie LaRoy, Chinese-American lesbian cabaret singer Li Jun Li's Lady Fay, African-American Jazz trumpeter Jovan Adepo's Sidney Palmer and, caught up in the middle of it all, Diego Calva's Mannie Torres, a Mexican immigrant who finds himself in the right place at the right time. Babylon follows an ambitious cast of characters — The Silent Film Superstar (Brad Pitt), the Young Starlet (Margot Robbie), the Production Executive (Diego Calva), the Musical Sensation (Jovan Adepo) and the Alluring Powerhouse Performer (Li Jun Li) — who are striving to stay on top of the raucous, 1920s Hollywood scene and maintain their relevance at a time when the industry is moving on to the next best thing,” reads the synopsis. dba Freestar (“Freestar”) for the purposes of placing certain advertising on the site, and Freestar will collect and use certain data for advertising purposes.Plus, Clava, Robbie, and Pitt all give such powerful, wild, and tragic performance as you watch them sweat their ways through the tumultuous time that the film depicts. Not to be left out is Sidney Palmer (Jovan Adepo), a trumpet player who’s ostracized due to his skin color.

BABYLON follows an ambitious cast of characters — The Silent Film Superstar (Brad Pitt), the Young Starlet (Margot Robbie), the Production Executive (Diego Calva), the Musical Sensation (Jovan Adepo) and the Alluring Powerhouse Performer (Li Jun Li) — who are striving to stay on top of the raucous, 1920s Hollywood scene and maintain their relevance at a time when the industry is moving on to the next best thing.Paramount's 4K disc is a stunner - outstanding native 4K with Dolby Vision HDR, and a stunning accompanying Atmos track - and only adds to the immersion, rounded out with a few extras, and making for a recommended release for fans of the film who are up for a rewatch. The 4K UHD Steelbook release of ‘Babylon’ (which was the version sent from the studio for review) features alternate artwork and a nice sturdy and glossy Steelbook case, as well as including a Blu-ray copy of the film.

Babylon's 2160p/Doby Vision UHD release offers a fair upgrade from the Blu-ray, at times only subtly superior and at others more obviously superior. In fact, even with a three hour runtime, Chazelle frequently feels like he doesn't have the room to tell the whole story - a five hours epic dissection of this period in Hollywood history crammed into three hours courtesy of that aforementioned judicious editing. Dolby Vision HDR enjoys a hell of a workout between the exciting range of primaries, shadows, and brilliant lighting effects and scenery. Indeed, the opening few minutes alone will likely determine whether or not you're prepared to invest another second in the remaining three hours of its mammoth runtime - an elephant with a diarrhetic outburst, a morbidly obese man lapping up a golden shower and a tiny man holding a giant fake penis bigger than him to spray the gagging crowd with 'ejaculate'.The film will also be available in a standard 4K UHD release (although no Blu-ray copy of the film is included). It delivers everything within immaculately from character outfits, facial details and backgrounds to the landscapes, sets and everything else which all look spectacular with a clear improvement in detail and clarity compared to the Blu-ray. The Babylon domestic release will come with 40 minutes of behind-the-scenes interviews and deleted scenes.

Even with some of the most ghastly grotesque fluids escaping any number of orifices, the film is rich with fine details. Linus Sandgren’s cinematography compliments them, giving the first half of Babylon a gorgeous, glitzy sheen, then shifting the second half into a darker, moodier visual style. The group navigates the highs and lows of the movie industry during the transition from The Silent Era to The Golden Age of Hollywood, with the interstitial birth of the Talkies period proving more treacherous than many might have thought. And of course, I don’t think a Damien Chazelle movie would be complete with kick ass jazz music to carry us through it.

It's an indulgently overlong piece of work too, necessary perhaps to tell this story - and edited to within an inch of its life; it moves at a breakneck pace despite the fact it clocks in at 189 minutes - but is simply exhausting in its rollercoaster ride through hell, repeatedly pounding you over the head with its sentiments of how disloyal, fickle, corrupt, soul-destroying and just plain horrible Hollywood was (and, by extension, is) until you're a bloody mess come the end of it. Frequent Chazelle collaborator Linus Sandgren once again proves he’s one of the best shooters working today. Babylon’ invites you to witness the chaotic world of 1920’s Los Angeles; a time filled with wild parties, excessive drug use and debauchery back when the world of silent film still reigned and those who were known could get away with nearly anything.
