About this deal

The Zeiss Batis 40mm f2.0 CF is only available for E-mount and costs around 1300 EUR/USD. The lens is relatively light and offers very good close-focus capabilities up to a magnification of 1:3.1. It delivers a field-of-view that’s 6 degrees narrower than from the Sony (57 vs 63 degrees, see comparison below) and has a one stop better light gathering power. See my Zeiss Batis 40mm f2.0 CF review where it earned a Highly Recommended. Astigmatism is seen as points of light spreading into a line, either sagittal (radiating from the center of the image) or meridional (tangential, perpendicular to sagittal).

It is more a filter adapter to use 40.5mm filters instead of 49mm; it offers very little light shielding. The effect of different colors of the spectrum being magnified differently is referred to as lateral (or transverse) CA (Chromatic Aberration). With a 1 1/3 stop wider max aperture advantage, this 35mm f/2.8 lens can stop action in less than one half as much light and it permits handholding in similarly-lower light levels. The FE 2.8/35 does not feature floating elements so performance suffers quite a bit at shorter distances. F/2.8 is a bit soft, f/4 is good and you should stop down to f/5.6 for very good results. f/5.6 vs f/2.8 – 100% crops, LR default settings Sony FE 2.8/35 at it’s close focusing distance | f/5.6 | full resolution Alternatives Optically, this lens is a stellar performer, as many Zeiss lenses are, with very sharp images on both the new full-frame cameras as well as sub-frame Sony cameras. Other factors like chromatic aberration and distortion are practically nonexistent with this lens, but there is some vignetting and a minor amount of corner softness, particularly on full-frame cameras at wider apertures -- a pretty small price to pay for outstanding performance otherwise. Even for a prime lens, this lens' minimum focus distance is not very short, only 13.8" (350mm), and that focus distance gives this lens a very low 0.12x maximum magnification.

Just grab the focus ring anytime for instant manual-focus override —but only if you've set your camera to DMF focus mode. The score of 2[-]/3[0]/7[+] shows that the Sony FE 35mm f2.8 ZA has some good and some weak points: It’s very small and light – but then it offers a focal ratio of only f2.8. Its maximum magnification of 1:7.5 is a bit disappointing compared to the other lenses and although the lens is cheaper than the alternatives with a focal ratio of f2.0 or f1.4 it still costs a pretty penny – especially compared to the Samyang which looks almost like a clone of the Sony FE 35mm f2.8 ZA. This Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 is a compact and ultrasharp wide lens for Sony's NEX and A7 series of cameras.Lateral CA shows as color fringing along lines of strong contrast running tangential (meridional, right angles to radii) with the mid and especially the periphery of the image circle showing the greatest amount as this is where the greatest difference in the magnification of wavelengths typically exists.
