About this deal

Apple TV+ renews heartwarming comedy "Trying" for season four". Apple TV+ Press (United Kingdom) . Retrieved 26 July 2023.

Even before the book starts she’s had to flee her successful job in London and long-term relationship with Jonathan, her business partner and the man she was trying to start a family with, after discovering he was having an affair. That’s a tribute to my friend who once genuinely convinced me that it was pronounced “The Ma-goose”. Jane’s struggles with conception, anxiety and undiagnosed OCD are immaculately written and Jane is Trying covers the ‘not knowing’ and ‘trying to figure it out’ aspect of life really well. On the day of the adoption hearing, Nikki's confidence of success is at an all time low, so Jason proposes they get married whilst all still together as a family. At the hearing Bev makes it clear she doesn't want to lose her grandchildren, but is reassured when Nikki tells her there will always be a place for her in the kid's lives. With the court approving the adoption, they learn the identity of the flat's new owner. With pressures mounting, Nikki and Jason's relationship comes under strain. Nikki starts to doubt if they are indeed the best thing for the kids. After a disastrous Book launch Scott starts to come to the realisation that maybe writing is not his forte, but it is perhaps Karen's.I think Isy Suttie handles all this really well in her latest novel, Jane is Trying - a warm and funny observation of one woman’s attempt to start over. At a party with other couples trying to adopt, Nikki and Jason realise the other couple trying to adopt Princess and Tyler are none other than their hosts. Karen’s doubts that Scott may not be the man for her grow and she seeks solace with Deven, single dad and father of one of her pupils. Maybe. I haven’t gigged for so long, it’s hard to gauge the standup circuit. This behaviour hasn’t suddenly increased, it’s always been there. It’s just being called out now, and that’s great. I used to romanticise the life of a writer – banging away at a typewriter, fuelled by cigarettes, coffee and booze Whilst enjoying the storyline I didn’t really connect with Jane. To me she was just a bit too self absorbed and passive, relying on others rather than making assertive choices, though she did evolve towards the end. I loved some of the other characters who were well written and believable - especially Monica the hopelessly unprofessional therapist and Kelly a single mother who takes Jane under her wing. Dealing with anxiety and how it can come to be in a sensitive matter, this book really highlighted those fatalistic intrusive thoughts that are often out of our control but become all-consuming.

Now a manager, Jason finds his new role rather challenging so seeks advice from Freddy. Nikki helps Karen select a wedding dress but is on tenterhooks with the expectation of news from the adoption agency. When it eventually arrives they find they have been unsuccessful, but Penny softens the blow by offering the chance of meeting some kids at an adoption activity day, where Nikki catches sight of Princess. At Princess's school Nikki and Jason get the opportunity to observe her with brother Tyler. With approval to adopt only one child they know that the siblings will have to be split up, but are excited nevertheless. Unbeknown to them, a family that can adopt both children is under consideration. There are some truly chaotic and humorous family scenes and an overall warmth running through the book, with a large cast of quirky characters and a dose of community action to boot. The starting point was her working in a bookshop. The first part I wrote was Jane with her boss, gossiping about the types of customers who come in. Quite innocuous, but it evolved from there. Initially, she’d already had a child, but when I tried to write that, the kid was so annoying, I couldn’t bear it [laughs]. It felt completely wrong, so I cruelly cut the child and had her trying for a baby instead. With only 3 months left on their tenancy, Jason discovers the landlord has decided to sell the flat when a For Sale sign goes up outside. He formulates a plan to buy the place himself. At work, Nikki in her new role as management, is tasked with selecting one of the telesales team for dismissal. At an adoption support group picnic, Nikki develops an inferiority complex, alarmed by the fact there are many other couples also vying to adopt children, some more educated and financially better off than her and Jason. Jason makes her realise that the people they need to impress are not their peers or even the social workers, but the kids they hope to adopt. With a week to go until the interview with the adoption panel, Nikki and Jason invite their friends and family support network to a party, including both sets of would-be grandparents and newly-engaged sister Karen with fiancee Scott. A party which of course goes anything but to plan. Fingas, Roger (12 July 2019). "Apple's first BBC comedy production is 'Alabama' starring Imelda Staunton". AppleInsider. This is a funny and sweet story about trying to start afresh when your past haunts you, and the realities of being an independent adult. Returning to her home town from London means Jane is forced to adapt to her new circumstances and face her future head on. There is some intricate commentary at play around mental health and agency, and I liked how Jane’s growth directly explored this. Hearing Freddy confess to an affair, blaming the stress of family life, makes Jason doubt whether he wants to go through with adoption and take on something that will affect every aspect of the rest of his life. Sensing his cold feet, Nikki is upset when she learns he only agreed to adoption in an effort to make her happy. Alongside the initial report of the series in July 2019, it was announced that Imelda Staunton would feature in the series. In the press release of January 2020, Apple announced that Rafe Spall and Esther Smith would star in the series. [9] Reception [ edit ] Critical response [ edit ] Everyone could analyse the way we’ve aged too. Maybe in another 10 years, so it’s the same gap as Friends. Wait until we’ve spent all our money on Botox and really need the fee.Kanter, Jake (24 March 2021). "Apple Renews British Comedy 'Trying' Ahead Of Season 2 Premiere On May 14". Deadline Hollywood . Many authors might be tempted to define their character purely by these concerns, but Suttie’s made them just part of Jane’s complex character, not all of it. Her mental health issues make her more resilient, not more fragile and she’s charming and funny as well as troubled, easy to root for as each event takes her further and further off course. Slowly. I did a course at City Lit, but then kids got in the way. We speak some Welsh at home – always say cegin instead of kitchen and bara instead of bread. I’d love my Welsh to be better. Perhaps that’s a project for the next pandemic. You know, in six months’ time. Ha. Well, as you probably know, Sharon Osbourne has written three. My friend Anne gave me the first one as a gift; I thought it was quite cool in a kitsch way. I wanted Jane to be reading a celebrity memoir and tried loads of options – Lulu and Gary Barlow came close – but kept returning to Sharon’s. Then I read her latest memoir and found out she quite liked Trump when she was on The Celebrity Apprentice, but it was too late. We’ll see how this one goes. Maybe in the sequel, Jane Is Really Trying, she could be reading the next Sharon Osbourne book. I’ve also been thinking about writing a young adult novel or a new standup show. I’ll get summer out of the way, go to Center Parcs and we’ll see. After I remortgage the house, so we can afford Center Parcs. I didn’t plan it, but it’s so much in the air at the moment. I think I absorbed it and did it subconsciously. I don’t think I’d have written that 10 years ago, so it must be influenced by #MeToo. I’m glad it’s in there.
