About this deal

Arrow's 4K release delivers faithfully impressive native 4K video, with Dolby Vision HDR, a solid pair of audio tracks, and a decent swathe of extra features on the 4K disc itself, with the set available in a variety of Limited Edition flavours that vary only in accompanying packaging, steelbook alternative packaging, and physical paraphernalia within the box itself. Finally, look for Kevin Reynolds’ Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) on 11/28 in Blu-ray and 4K Limited Editions, as well as Blu-ray and 4K Steelbook Limited Editions. Over the decades, many films have been made about the legendary Robin Hood, who stole from the rich to give to the poor. It is a big improvement on the previous release, Blacks are still slightly dull but the colours are much more pronounced and the disc is definitely worth the upgrade.

It made me appreciate the ATMOS arrow effects whooshing past my ears in the Gladiator 4K and wish it was present here. be sure to check back here later today and throughout the weekend, as I expect to start posting reviews of some out-of-this-world 4K Ultra HD catalog titles that many of you have been waiting a long time for.

The same can be said for Christian Slater, whose Jack Nicholsonisms don’t go anywhere as Will Scarlet and Mike McShane, though he gets by a little more, given that his performance is all drunken bluster (and one great joke: “Oh, is this your finger? Again, it’s an interesting watch, and the backstory on Densham and Watson’s early years in the business and how they got the film set up is particularly engaging, but it suffers from not having been able to get any of the cast’s bigger names to come back.

Having just had the critical double-whammy of Dances with Wolves and JFK, Costner hit the height of his commercial success with the double-bill of Prince of Thieves and The Bodyguard, an absolute peak in his career which would soon come crashing down with the commercial missteps of Wyatt Earp, Waterworld and The Postman. This Arrow set is just the perfect tribute to a film that felt like pure adventure to me as a child, and still stirs up those feelings again all these years later. For every movie fan there are probably several films they can count as milestones, movies that became big parts of our viewing, even of our lives. Costner’s English accent is all over the place as is Christian Slater’s as Will Scarlett, but the film moves at a brisk pace even in the more extended director’s cut and Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham steals the show with a hilarious over the top and very funny performance.

Theatrical Cut (UHD; 2:23:12) and Extended Cut (UHD; 2:35:02) are accessible under the Choose Version Menu. gives Robin a patrician background that has ended up with him in prison in Jerusalem after some adventures in a Crusade. Dialogue is clear throughout, although if you'd have to scratch for some criticism it's in the feeling - fleeting as it may be - that it's occasionally fractionally out of synch on the 5. It should be noted that MANY of these titles are making their first-ever appearance on the Blu-ray format here. This grand, swashbuckling adventure in the classic tradition is brought to life by an all-star supporting cast, including Christian Slater (True Romance), Brian Blessed (Flash Gordon) and a memorable cameo from Sean Connery (himself a former Robin Hood), plus an instantly recognisable score by Michael Kamen (Highlander) – not to mention a chart-topping Bryan Adams theme song.

This film was never going to be lauded for originality, but it knows what it wants to be and executes every element excellently. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves dazzles in an all-new 4K restoration, accompanied by a king’s ransom of new and archival bonus features. With native 4K from a shot-on-film source, we're in good hands for Arrow's presentation, albeit under the caveat that Prince of Thieves was largely shot on location, in Nottingham no less, and so you have to be prepared for all that comes with a 90's UK location shoot, including variable lighting and the cascading ramifications of that.
