This wooden coal tipple is one of the last structures of its kind in the American West. It’s a great example of mining technology used in the late 1800s, constructed to store coal coming out of the mine and sort the resource as it moved down the chutes.

As an additional precaution to take care of this life-blood circulation, without which work in the mine would be impossible, inspectors — whose duty it was to measure the strength of the current, and to inspect the doors and stoppings to see that no part of the mine escaped the cleansing draft — passed constantly from place to place, testing for the presence of gas with their safetylamps, and ever measuring the volume and flow of the air-current.
