About this deal

Longer 5ft-plus rigs spread hook baits over a wider area and are the ideal choice for surf or estuary fi shing. In surf a longer rig increases the chances of placing bait where the surf gouges the sand and marine life, a notorious hot spot. As said before, it is always a good idea to try different baits to see which one is the most effective. This is the opportunity that the flapper rig offers, so make sure to take maximum advantage of it.

Since dropper loops are also used for many other saltwater bottom rigs, it’s well worth learning to tie this knot. For more information, read our detailed guide to the dropper loop rig. Double drop bottom rig The term flapper refers to the fact that the hook snoods hang loose and flap during the cast, so obviously, it is not the rig to choose if you need to fish a long-range. Pompano, the surfperch, the bream, the whiting, flounder, the puppy drum… are the kind of species we talk about here. These species are generally found around the first sandbar of the surf (typically at 20-40 yards from the shoreline), and thus the casting distance should not be a cause of concern. Moreover, these species usually feed in schools, so throwing multiple hooks may result in multiple catches and should increase your overall productivity. You can also add a buffer bead between the sinker and the swivel, which protects the knot on the swivel from being damaged. Finally, you can also peg a float to the leader, and turn it into a floating fish finder rig. I like to do this when the crabs keep on stealing my bait. When distance is a priority clip down the bait close to the main trace line. We have shown you how to do this in earlier rig building sequences in this series. Two hooks are a popular compromise and very often the choice of the freelance angler for runof- the-mill venues and also mixed species fishing. Just a couple of millimetres of 0.5mm silicone is perfect for the job. This will hold the Hair nicely, but will also allow movement as the hook embeds, ensuring that the hook-hold isn’t impeded.

Beads and / or sequins can be added to the snoods as attractors before adding the hooks; buoyant beads can be effective on the upper snoods. Luminous floating beads will lift baits clear of bait-robbing crabs, while poly balls are becoming a feature of summer rigs aimed at surface species, such as garfish. Rattle beads can be used, while heavy plastic or metallic beads will pin the baits to the sea bed to combat tide.

The Carolina rig is one of the most versatile bottom fishing rigs that catches fish almost anywhere, and hence it comes as no surprise that it is also a great rig for fishing in the surf. With 2-3 hooks spinning around, the flapper rig makes it possible to deploy baits at different spots in the same moment. This gives you more chances to hook up on something and increase your bite per cast ratio.

I prefer mono and fluoro over braid because they are better abrasion resistants and will perform well when fishing sharp structures or when targeting sharp-toothed fish. But with all those baits flapping around you casting distance will be limited. So if you do need get your bait out further, you'll need to use the clipped-down version of the rig. Tie the hooks to the snoods and then to the swivels; the snood lengths should be around 300 – 500 mm depending upon the length of the trace body. If you need to fish with longer snoods then it will be necessary to either lengthen the trace body, which may restrict casting. or reduce the number of snoods to two.D Make the length of line between snoods long enough so that the two hooks do not touch, and therefore do not tangle. Multi-hook rigs are notoriously prone to tangling during long casts, and this is why it’s important to choose a rig that is sufficiently tangle free for your purposes. Our evening proved to be a successful one, not counting all the other species also landed on the urfe, we recorded 4 Sole on the urfe to the 1 on the flapper, we kept the 4 better ones for the dinner table. This was a comprehensive if not wholly statistically proven victory for the urfe; a confidence booster in it’s use and potential in any event. Personally, I only use the flapper rig when I have more than one rod (Which I usually do). I tie the 2-hooks version of this rig on one rod, and another rig (Generally the fish finder rig), on the other rods. In such conditions, it is better to use minimalistic rigs so you can reduce the impact of the current and keep your bait where it should be.
