About this deal

Beyond the Deep Woods is the best written and illustrated children's book I have come across for pre-teens. The first books in the edge chronicles were all 5 star, but now the fourth book in the series really takes the biscuit. Da die Wesen sich während der Begegnungen auch nicht sonderlich viel Witziges oder Intelligentes zu sagen haben, wird das ganze trotz aller Exotik recht schnell eintönig. Here is a tale of fantastic lands at the edge of the world, where certain rocks float in the air and the feared Deepwoods are crowded with extraordinary trees and creatures. The only reason why i never put it down was because i was waiting for something good to happen, by the time i realized nothing good was going to happen it was too late for me to put ti down.

And they're especially good for those who don't like reading endless blocks of text, as the illustrations break it up nicely. Huge with tree-trunk legs and arms so long that their knuckles graze the ground, they have two tusks which curve up from the jutting lower jaw and large, doleful eyes. Perhaps they will be in future books, but in 'Beyond the Deepwoods' alone, it felt like everything was on the conveyer belt from the Generation Game: everything passing by quickly, and never sticking in your memory. What if the wise old oakelf had been saying — in his usual roundabout way — that because his nose didn’t like what it smelled, this was not his home? Paul Stewart is a highly regarded author of books for young readers - everything from picture books to football stories, fantasy and horror.

We have enjoyed developing the creatures as the series has progressed, learning about their natural habits and habitat and creating a language all of their own. Beyond the Deepwoods is about the Twig, a young humanoid character on his journey across The Edge, a fantasy world full to the brim with creatures and animals that both terrify and amaze us. Spelda sent Twig along the Woodtroll path to the house of Cousin Snetterbark, but Twig strayed from the path and became lost in the Deepwoods. Beyond the Deepwoods is filled with wonderful characters but there is one that stands head and shoulders above them all… the banderbear. You can feel the centuries old suspicions about certain creatures and places on the map, and if you aren't afraid of the Gloamglozer then you aren't human.

This book follows a young one by the name of Twig, who has been raised by woodtrools since he was a babe. When Cloud Wolf realized this, he was emotionally tortured by the thought, and left while Twig was sleeping. Eigentlich stolpert der Held nur von einem Missgeschick ins andere und bleibt dabei immer das hilflose Opfer aller Ereignisse, die sich zwar im Detail unterscheiden, letztlich aber immer nach dem selben Schema ablaufen. For example, once Twig makes the near-fatal mistake of straying from the path, he encounters oakelves, a halitoad, a hoverworm, Slaughterer’s, hammelhorns, a skullpelt, a caterbird, the bloodoak, Gyle goblins, their Grossmother, a spindlebug and the horrific rotsucker in very short succession. And, as Twig looked down into its huge and sorrowful eyes, he saw something unexpected quivering there in the dark green depths.

Raised by woodtrolls in the Deepwoods all his life, Twig believes he is one of them, yet strongly suspects there is something different about him, as he does not fit in with them; in particular, he feels a longing to live as a sky pirate. Certainly the wood of the bloodoak gave off a lot of heat, and it neither smelled nor sang, but the way it wailed and screamed as it burned put off all but a few.His adoptive mother tells him to travel to their cousin's house to mull things over, but during Twig's journey through the Deepwoods, he ends up unintentionally straying from the path. I was thinking I'd picked up a light-hearted children's fantasy that I'd whiz through without too much emotional attachment. The narrative will cast a spell over readers from the beginning with its utterly odd, off-kilter sense of logic and a vocabulary that is equal parts Dr. At four months you were already walking upright,’ she was saying, and Twig heard the pride in his mother’s words. It’s a book for children that’s so gripping and fascinatingly creative, it’s hard not to get sucked into this rich fantasy world.

It becomes a very real and frightening place to the reader, told in such a vivid way that you can just imagine every piece of it. There are 13 titles in five sagas in the series, but each book is a stand-alone adventure, so you can read? The main character is the usual weak male that finds his strength along the way, but the story is generally unique and pleasing. Paul Stewart is a highly regarded author of books for young readers – from picture books to football stories, fantasy and horror.Chris: I drew a map that looked like the edge of a map because I’ve always been fascinated by the edges of maps - the place where the known world ends. This is a great read for all ages but especially for those younger readers who like to read something with a bit of bite to it. Ganz im Gegenteil, da Twig von einer grausamen Misere in die andere stürzt, ist das Buch eher für ü 18! Even a personified object that accompanied Twig, like Wilson from Cast Away, would have added a lot to the story and his character development. That quote seemed a bit dramatic the first time I read it, but upon finishing this book, I thought, Okay maybe Adrienne Rich had a point there.
