It's not quite as amazingly well done as Bram Stoker's Dracula, but Mitchell does an excellent job of not letting the framing device get in the way of reading the stories, which is more than I can say about the actual annotations in my Clark Ashton Smith collection. Ripping good tales of derring do from the ever unlucky/fortunate hero and his skilled and trusty companion. Cain is a legend, forever being in the heart of the fight, saving entire worlds from mankind's greatest enemies. A great read as always, the adventures of Commissar Cain are as always great, especially when combined with the thoughts of Inquisitor Vale.

Landing behind enemy lines after three weeks, and after the fleet he was with makes planetfall on Perlia themselves, Cain and his aide Jurgen must make their way through an entire continent of greenskins with nothing but the supplies aboard the shuttle, what they can scrap from the Orks, and what remnants of the Perlian PDF that they can round up as they make their way back to Imperial lines. Cain and Jurgen manage to escape in an emergency pod, before the yacht is destroyed by the fleet's weapons. Saviour of the Imperium contains the novels The Emperor's Finest, The Last Ditch and The Greater Good, the novella Old Soldiers Never Die, along with a number of additional short stories. Cain believes there are far more dangerous places to be than surrounded by heavily armoured supermen, but is quickly disabused of that notion when he and Jurgen are forced to accompany the Astartes in their investigation of a space hulk infested with genestealers. There's something to be said for sticking to doing what you know how to do, and seeing as Mitchell does toe the line between "good" and "great" while doing that, I can't really complain about it.

Cain finds out he's being deployed somewhere, seems eager to go because it doesn't sound too bad, and makes a hindsight comment that "if I'd known what I was in for, I would've just gotten myself arrested for cowardice" or some such.
