Harold is determined to walk the six-hundred-mile distance, believing that as long as he walks, Queenie will survive. I’ve made no secret of my love for Amos Decker, a character created by David Baldacci four years ago via the first novel in the series, Memory Man. He realises it came before the murder of his family and perhaps started with the football injury that almost cost him his life, reflecting on its preciousness for the first time. With Hawkins recently released from his life sentence, Decker finds himself questioning what had once seemed watertight evidence.Werner Pfennig is a talented youth who earns a place beside the Nazis, tracking down any sign of resistance. It left him with hyperthymesia – the inability to forget anything, as well as seeing ‘colours’ around people.

As he learns more about the human cost of his work, he begins to seek a path away from the violence, leading him to Marie-Laure. I loved most of this book as the mystery unfolded and connections were uncovered, but I wasn’t ultimately enamoured of the direction it took, as it seemed a tad unrealistic (and left-fieldish). Vengeance, ahem, justice awakened him however and he’s been working with the FBI since, as part of a small task force – though generally given a bit of a free rein.

Living in a small English village with his wife, Harold Fry receives a letter from a woman he hasn’t seen nor heard from for twenty years. His grief is interrupted however by Hawkins, declaring his innocence 13 years after Decker and his former partner, Mary Lancaster put him away. As he starts digging into the old case, Decker finds a startling connection to a new crime that he may be able to prevent, if only he can put the pieces together quickly enough. Below are such character-driven works, focusing on humanity’s hopes of rising above adversity and being forgiven. Growing up, she became its Twitter spokeswoman, spouting its doctrine to everyone on the internet, whether they wanted to hear it or not.

Book review: Redemption by David Baldacci - Debbish Book review: Redemption by David Baldacci - Debbish

Ebenezer Scrooge is perhaps the most selfish of men, willing to grow his wealth at the cost of someone else’s happiness. I was reminded that we also didn’t see much of her in the second book of the series, The Last Mile, as I felt it was one that book’s weaknesses. However, their friendship comes to an end when one fails to prevent a tragedy despite having the opportunity to do so. And unsurprisingly while they’re unpicking the events of the past there’s movement in the present following Hawkins’ murder and it’s not long before Decker’s put the local police force offside. Beginning at the age of five, Megan Phelps-Roper became an active member of the Westboro Baptist Church, known for its extreme views against the LGBTQ+, other religions, and atheists.

Amazingly, the trashman offers a kinder alternative: 120 hours of community service working for him. Arthur is given a list of the seven most important things to collect and soon learns that the trash he’s gathering may be more precious than he thinks. I wonder if it’s because there’s a subtle (well, ish) sexual tension there and Baldacci’s wanting to drag that out. When he confides in her one of his most shameful secrets and asks a favor, Sage is forced to examine her morals and answer questions she’s avoided for years.

Thankfully Jamison’s not left Decker completely in the lurch and Melvin Mars – former death row inmate who Decker cleared in The Last Mile– comes to help. Back in his home town and plagued by the ghosts of his past, Amos Decker is compelled to discover the confronting truth in the fifth Memory Man thriller of David Baldacci’s number one bestselling series. It was the perfect opener because that’s exactly who and what Decker is thanks to a football injury he sustained when younger. Reading back on my reviews of the first four books, I seem to have occasionally had some issues with the plots themselves but – having said that – the characters and their story arcs are so strong it’s easy to ignore occasional feasibility issues.
