About this deal

Naked Malt is available in 70cl at 40% ABV. In the US & S Africa it’s available in 75cl at 43% ABV. This vatted malt whisky is pretty good. Overall, an okay dram from the famous Scottish brand. Needs lots of time in the glass to develop. Starts of stingy and with strong marzipan notes, which I always detest. But in the end, turns out just fine. Naked Malt’s flavor is said to be enhanced when the unique blend is extra-matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks for at least six months. The casks have never held whisky before and impart the best flavor and cask character to create a distinctive taste that is rich and fruity, yet versatile. Taking a sip, that fruit-forward flavor persists. This version seems to be a bit more “punched in” in terms of the saturation of those flavors than the original Famous Grouse edition (probably thanks to those sherry casks used in the finishing process). The first thing I get is actually a bit of orange citrus, followed by some melon and apple. On Ice William Gloag dies; his nephew, Matthew Gloag III, takes over the business. The Gloags register their first blended Scotch: the Brig o’ Perth

For our consumers, the whisky category can be difficult to navigate and bound with conventions they don’t want to be constrained by, so for us, it’s about making whisky more accessible,” Elaine Miller, Global Brand Controller at Naked Malt, said in a prepared statement. “We want to give a new generation the freedom to try whisky their way, whilst providing the reassurance of a great quality, versatile liquid.” It wasn’t until Matthew Gloag III inherited the business from William in 1896 that the company registered its first blended Scotch, the Brig o’ Perth. A year later, The Famous Grouse was released at the same time as The Grouse Brand. Not just Steve Buscemi with a skateboard— this actually is a scotch with a flavor that should appeal to the younger crowd. And everyone else, for that matter. The rebranding will see one of these first-fill sherry casks replace the grouse on the bottle, which stays entirely transparent to showcase the liquid. Selected for the balance of sweetness and rich, fruity character they impart, these casks are four times the value of the bourbon casks used by competitor brands.Convention said Blended Malt matured and got its flavour from pre-used Bourbon casks. This got us thinking, what if instead we used first-fill sherry casks to add another layer of rich and fruity flavour to our unique blend of single malts? These are casks that have never held whisky, Naked Casks we call them. This liberating leap into the unknown didn’t just work, it was a joyful exuberance of flavour that changed the possibilities of whisky enjoyment! – Famous Grouse I enjoy this whisky and I hope that when Edrington sold Glenturret to Art & Terroir they were able to write in some stipulations about getting access to barrels to keep this brand going without having to dramatically change it. They also sold off Cutty Sark to La Martiniquaise at the same time, so who knows what’s going to happen with that one. But for now they’re holding on to all the Grouse brands so I’m hoping they can keep this going and keep it tasty. Anyways, time to drink! Something to note about that body is that, rather than the eponymous Famous Grouse being an illustration, now the grouse is molded right into the glass of the bottle. It’s a very cool and very interesting design feature. Brown moves the shop to 22 Atholl Street; this becomes the headquarters for The Famous Grouse for 99 years

Edrington, owner of Naked Grouse, said the change is being made in response to the increasing popularity of single malts, and demand from bartenders for an accessible whisky ‘with distinctive flavour’. Nose: “wait, I’ve smelt this before…. Glendroach 12 ! It didn’t have the horrible funkiness I find in other blends…. that’s cool I thought. Raisins, sultanas, vague nuttiness.. very nice. The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein. The Naked Grouse brand is uncomplicated; we’re trying to debunk terminology, so we don’t want to get bogged down in the technical side of what it is. It tastes great and that’s it.’

John Brown established his Perth grocery business in 1800 before moving the premises to Atholl Street seven years later. It was his daughter, Margaret, who married Matthew Gloag. She took over the family business from her father in 1824 and ran it until Matthew took control a little over a decade later. Naked Malt was initially launched as a ‘Blended Scotch’ under the name Naked Grouse in 2011. In 2017, to capitalise on the burgeoning popularity of contemporary whiskies, its formulation was changed to a ‘Blended Malt’, leading to consecutive years of double-digit growth*.The Naked Grouse Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is just plan good. It’s sippable, it’s mixable, it’s not too sweet and has a nice profile veteran drinkers can easily enjoy yet it’s 100% approachable for those venturing into the world of Scotch. It’s not incredibly complex, but what’s there is delivered with a warming richness that far exceeds expectations. I love it. Consumers and bartenders are looking for something more unique, which is why we wanted to move the brand on and change it.’ This November, the fastest-growing brand* in one of the fastest-growing spirit categories globally will undertake the next step in its evolution. The relaunch of Naked Malt, formerly Naked Grouse, will see no change to this award-winning liquid from ultra-premium spirits company The Edrington Group. But it will usher in a new name and look that reflects the brand’s growing appeal to a new generation of whisky drinkers. By the time Matthew Gloag died in 1860, the family business portfolio focused mostly on wines and his son, William Gloag, largely continued this trend.
