About this deal

Sure, it arrives a few years later than expected, but the answer for Alvvays is actually simple: They’ve changed gradually, growing on Blue Rev into one of their generation’s most complete and riveting rock bands.

Lollipop (Ode to Jim)” nods toward her JAMC stagemate Jim Reid through Psychocandy-like screeches and a sunny ditty about an acid trip, as Rankin sharply implores, “Alter my state to get through this date.Surf-tinged single “Plimsoll Punks” bops up against the barriers of scene and genre as Rankin, channeling the Television Personalities’ proto-C86 classic “Part Time Punks,” vividly skewers unspecified stick-in-the-muds (“You’re the seashell in my sandal that’s slicing up my heel”). Albeit cut a little hot I beg to differ on it being a fatigue inducing pressing, it’s crank-able and opens up the more you turn it up. His full length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm. Your Type,” a song that has been around since before the debut album, is an uproarious garage-rock tune about a conspiracy theory-spouting art-museum ejectee who feels molecularly incompatible (“Let me state delicately/You’re an O and I’m AB”). At least the five-year wait was worthwhile: Blue Rev doesn’t simply reassert what’s always been great about Alvvays but instead reimagines it. Better yet, in a similar vein, is “Not My Baby,” an aching and ethereal song that bum-bums like the answer to the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby. On the second day, they ripped through Blue Rev front-to-back twice, pausing only 15 seconds between songs and only 30 minutes between full album takes. There are newly aggressive moments here—the gleeful and snarling guitar solo at the heart of opener “Pharmacist,” or the explosive cacophony near the middle of “Many Mirrors. Another way to consider Alvvays’ preferred place in the music landscape is through their usual choices in covers.

They never intended to take five years to finish their third album, the nervy joyride that is the compulsively lovable Blue Rev. The Toronto band spent most of the past few years playing bigger and bigger stages, including Glastonbury in 2015 and Coachella in 2016, not long after lead singer Molly Rankin joined the Jesus and Mary Chain onstage at a festival in Australia. despite being great new music, this particular pressing is nonetheless "exhausting and unnecessarily loud" (tons of vocal sibilance) as well as "very distorted" and "muffed, [with] vocals [that] are barely audible. Over its 40 years in business, PIAS has grown to be one of the largest independently-owned music groups in the world, carving out its own in-house recorded music division PIAS [Recordings].

Similar noisy melancholy drifted over to Prince Edward Island, finding Alec O'Hanley, Brian Murphy and Philip MacIsaac. As a result, their debut self-titled album is both sun-splashed and twilit - nine songs concealing drunkenness, defeat and death in tungsten-tinted pop that glitters like sea glass. Regarding the album itself, this is some of the most infectious, brilliant indie music I've heard in a long time, and cements Alvvays' status as one of my favorite artists ever. But it's quiet and clearly a very good mastering, I'll agree it's better than the CD, which I heard it on first.

Heartbreaks of different shades soon entered their lives, as did the music of Teenage Fanclub and Belle and Sebastian. Classic indie pop dynamics meet sweetly dark lyrical turns for an album that improves listen on listen. Every element of Alvvays leveled up in the long interim between albums: Riley is a classic dynamo of a drummer, with the power of a rock deity and the finesse of a jazz pedigree. Global lockdowns notwithstanding, circumstances both ordinary and entirely unpredictable stunted those sessions. Not sure why Rough Trade thought the bigger, bulky PVC sleeve was a good idea, as it is only a week and a half old and has started coming apart at the seams. This record is fun and often funny, from the hilarious reply-guy bash of “Very Online Guy” to the parodic grind of “Pomeranian Spinster. Aside from those mix discrepancies this is super enjoyable, details otherwise missing or extremely drowned due to compression in the digital version shine through here, feels like a completely different mix! Recorded at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley's Extraordinaires) and crack team of a-list musicians, his upcoming album blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. I thought the bass was lacking in some tracks on streaming, but the bass and drums sound massive on this pressing.
