The OEX Phoxx 2 is incredibly cheap for what you’re getting and for those starting out with long-distance backpacking, its durability and stability make it more forgiving in windy conditions, meaning you can pitch it in some fairly exposed areas should you find yourself struggling to find a more suitable campsite. Waking the next day, our neighbouring mountains had a lot more snow on them than the previous night, and there were flakes on snow in the air around us. I was used to the setup which is exactly the same as the Phoxx 1, so it was a clear choice without offending the wallet.

The guy lines are a shade of burnt orange, and the combination of all these makes for a very attractive package you might want to take on a camping date. When being used or carried by just one person you can leave the tent inner in place and just put it all into one bag along with the poles and the pegs.It’s not as beautifully crafted as my Stratospire 2, but for a budget tent I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. You can have the inner door closed but the mesh panel wide open, this would be perfect for those hot sticky nights where you need a cool but done want to be bitten to death by the midges and other insects. There’s a hanging point both in the inner pod and front porch for hanging lights or head torches (that’s what we did).

It weighs in at just over 3kg and packed down is about the size of a rolled up pusser’s issue roll mat. Quick and easy to pitch, the OEX Jackal II features an integrated footprint for the large vestibule, to keep your pack and boots safe and dry overnight. You can roll this away if you want, but I found it really useful to have a nice dry spot for storing boots and our bag. The inner storage pockets are half way along the sidewall and not in the corners by your head, like you find on most other tents. Anodised aluminium rings for guy rope tensioners instead of your usual plastic, metal poles, nice thick pegs, anodised loops for the ends of the poles to sit in.Every OEX tent comes with a waterproof 'split bag', letting you divide the tent into two parts and share the carrying load. The inner pod is a lovely subtle yellow colour, not too bright and it gives a nice light and airy feel to the inside of the tent. Packed with features found in more expensive tents in its class, the Phoxx 2 will keep you well-sheltered in the British weather with room for 2 plus gear. This OEX Jackal, a Vango something or other and a red Berghaus one that had faded to pink, obviously having spent a good few months pitched outside. The Jackal III is definitely a fast pitch, consisting of only 2 colour coded poles, setting up at the shoreline of Loch Morlich was painless and straight forward.
