About this deal

Huw begins school at a nearby village. Abused by other boys, he is taught to fight by boxer Dai Bando and his crony, Cyfartha. After a beating by the cruel teacher Mr. Jonas, Dai Bando avenges Huw with an impromptu boxing display on Mr. Jonas to the delight of his pupils. Written in 1939, HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY is a tribute to the Welsh people and culture. Prior to reading this book, I don't think I'd ever felt as immersed in a version of our own world as I did in this one. Many a fantasy novel captured my imagination, but a work of historical fiction set only a few decades in the past? That was a first. Llewellyn's storytelling is second to none. To this day I'm in awe of the compassion and loving attention to detail that went into the telling. A very favorite passage (from so many it's impossible to count): Narration by an older Huw recalls, "Men like my father cannot die. They are with me still, real in memory as they were in flesh, loving and beloved forever. How green was my valley then." Protagonists who assume new identities, often because they are transplanted into foreign cultures, are a recurring element in Llewellyn's novels, including a spy adventure that extends through several volumes.

The Marged story arc was beyond ridiculous, I didn't buy her going crazy and setting herself on fire just because of Owen. Her whole relationship with Owen occurred over the course of a few days, they didn't have a long romance or a deep connection of any kind. Their relationship consisted entirely of a few kisses and half-hearted promises over the course of a week. But for some bizarre reason Marged never recovered from his rejection, even when she got married to Gwilym (who she knew better and had far more of a bond with). Yea, Owen was barely in her life long enough for him to have such an effect on her. The whole thing was daft, if their courtship had been longer or they'd been childhood sweethearts or something then her Owen-related madness/death might have been plausible but that wasn't the case. Ugh, I hated what happened to Marged, so bloody nonsensical. The fact behind the fiction was uncovered by researchers looking for a way to celebrate this year's sixtieth anniversary of the book. The history lesson was terrific and an excellent complement to Elizabeth Gaskell's brilliant North and South, as well as my non-fiction reads on industrialization and populist and socialist movements in Britain and the U.S. In 2017, the book was also adapted as a short film parts of which are shown in the music video [6] for the song Pleader [7] by the band alt-J. It has a special place in the hearts of many readers across the world and Llewellyn was never again able to replicate its lasting appeal in any of his 26 other books. He claimed to be a miner's son born in St David's who worked down the pits at Gilfach Goch, where his novel was set. In truth he was born in Hendon, London, in 1906, the son of a publican. His first job was washing dishes at Claridges.

The 1940 film, starring Maureen O'Hara and a young Roddy McDowell, was filmed in Malibu and directed by American John Ford. It won six Oscars and was adapted twice for BBC television. A glitzy musical followed. He dedicated the follow-up to me, which was rather embarrassing as it was rather a poor work,' laughed Stephens. It was also adapted for three one-hour broadcasts of the Lux Radio Theatre: on September 21, 1942, with Allgood, Crisp, O'Hara, McDowall and Pidgeon; [27] on March 31, 1947, with Crisp and David Niven; [28] and on September 28, 1954, with Crisp and Donna Reed. [29] See also [ edit ] Although acclaimed by critics, literary contemporaries and commentators, How Green Was My Valley perplexed mining communities. They did not wholly recognise themselves in what was supposed to be an authentic tale and the sentimentality brought its own controversy. But they were won over by the novel's enthusiastic reception elsewhere. While the opinion among the Academy Awards committee that it was 1941's Best Picture has been disputed by some later critics, [15] [16] How Green Was My Valley continues to be well received in its own right and, in 1990, was added to the American National Film Registry. Academy Award-winning actor and director Clint Eastwood named it as one of his favorite movies. [17] Accolades [ edit ] Alternate "Style B" theatrical poster Award The novel is set in South Wales during the reign of Queen Victoria. It tells the story of the Morgans, a respectable mining family of the South Wales Valleys, through the eyes of one of the sons, Huw Morgan. This is easily my most favorite and special book. It's something so beautiful that my heart aches to dwell on it. It aches because I long to be apart of something so perfect and wish for such beauty in everything I experience.

The first edition was published in 1939 by Michael Joseph Ltd, London. [4] The first printing included a limited edition run of 200, numbered and signed by Richard Llewellyn. The original print run also included a glossary covering Welsh words and terms at the end of the book. But not everyone can forgive Llewellyn's fraudulent past. Professor Ian Bell of Swansea University believes the author's false image of Wales is deeply xenophobic. The novel has been translated into 30 languages and has never been out of print since it was launched two weeks after the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.

I enjoyed Huw's character for the most part, he was much more endearing when he was younger though. I didn't find him as interesting when he was older, he seemed to lose all his charm and depth and just wasn't all that likeable. Thankfully, most of the book was about his childhood rather than his adulthood.

Some of Llewellyn's descriptions caught my breath such as this one of Angharad when fighting with 14-year-old Huw:As Huw matures the tone of the book darkens. Labor and management conflicts come to the valley and its mines and Huw's family is drawn into disputes that threaten to tear father from son, brother from brother. Huw's academic ability sets him apart from his elder brothers and enables him to consider a future away from the dangerous coal mines. His five brothers and his father are miners. After his eldest brother, Ivor, is killed in a mining accident, Huw moves in with his sister-in-law, Bronwen, with whom he has always been in love. [3]
