About this deal

review how that film may have outstayed its running time welcome, though I personally found it a rather brisk viewing experience. Kind of

I have to say the film didn’t carry me away as much on a 75-inch TV at home as it did in 3D HFR at a huge Dolby Vision cinema. But that says much more about the ongoing value of a top quality commercial cinema experience than it does about weaknesses with The Way Of Water’s 4K Blu-ray release. Stunts – James Cameron and Avatar’s stunt coordinators discuss how they learned to move like a Na’vi, ride a Leonopteryx, and more. High contrast and detailed images like this are done beautifully for the most part by the Avatar: ... [+] The Way Of Water 4K Blu-ray transfer. Photo: DisneyBringing Pandora to Life – Once James Cameron completes his virtual production process, every sequence is turned over to Weta FX to bring Pandora to life – with unprecedented advancements in facial performance, environments and making CG water look real. The 167-minute theatrical presentation of the film only will be offered in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio on UHD-100 and BD-50 disc configurations, with HDR10 high dynamic range (UHD only). (Per the studio, average bit rate is approx. 60.5 Mbps for UHD and 28.5 Mbps for Blu-ray.) (Note that the 170-minute and 178-minute extended versions of the film are not included, and many special features from the Extended Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release are not included, so fans may wish to keep that release.)

It’s saying something when the extra features provided with Avatar: The Way Of Water add up to almost as long a running time as the film itself. It’s a truly outstanding effort from Cameron and co that covers, through a mix of a feature-length making of documentary and a fantastic series of smaller featurettes, every conceivable element of the mind-bendingly massive process involved with making a film as ‘out there’ as Avatar: The Way Of Water.

Having extoled the virtues of film length in the past, with such luminaries as Seven Samurai, Gandhi, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Lord of the Rings Flying Vehicles – Explore the design of the RDA’s gunships and how they helped ground the story in a realistic world audiences could connect to. Still, the dramatic narrative here remains frustratingly simplistic. At the core of both Avatar films lies the myth of native peoples living in perfect harmony with their environments. While it may be true that they live in greater harmony, they’re still exploiting the environment in their own ways for survival—it’s just that some types of exploitation are more sustainable than others. But the real issue is that The Way of Water also reveals the essential paradox at the heart of this filmmaker’s vision, and frankly much of his career: Cameron’s environmental concerns are counterbalanced by his obvious fascination with technology, military hardware in particular. Avatar and The Way of Water are both staggeringly-beautiful productions that preach peace and celebrate nature, while also finding endless and ingeniously-creative ways to depict violence, fetishizing AMP suits and gunships to the same degree as banshees and tulkun. Thirteen years later, Cameron’s world-building remains superb. It’s just that he’s once again allowed his predilections to get the better of his pretensions. And for all the moms and grandmas in the house, Paramount has just made the Digital version of Kyle Marvin’s 80 for Brady available today. Physical Blu-ray and DVD versions will follow on 5/2, in time for Mother’s Day.

Pandora's Returning Characters (HD; 9:00) revisits the characters already introduced in the first film. Director James Cameron shared a statement in tandem with the announcement, thanking audiences who watched the movie in theaters and expressing his hopes that viewers at home still watch it on the biggest screen that they can: However, danger looms and Quaritch and his RDA forces have returned to the lush moon, this time to claim it as a replacement to Earth. Jake and Neytiri are forced to explore more of Pandora and make their way to the shore to live with a new Na’vi clan called the Metkayina. We anticipate that Avatar: The Way of Water will be available on DVD, Blu-ray or Ultra HD in either May or June. We will keep this article updated with any official information from Disney.Does this mean I’d have liked Disney to spread the transfer over two discs? Not necessarily. Nothing would break the immersion The Way Of Water so desperately wants to create more than having to stop halfway through the film and change over discs. But even with 100GB to play with instead of 66, there’s a limit to what even the cleverest of masters - which this genuinely is - can do.
