About this deal

He is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, as well as the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death. In 1891, Wilde began an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed ‘Bosie’, who became both the love of his life and his downfall. Now and then, however, he is horribly thoughtless, and seems to take a real delight in giving me pain. Well, as far as I am concerned, it certainly stands out from the rest of his poetry, which, I confess, I don't really like. You will bitterly reproach him in your own heart, and seriously think that he has behaved very badly to you.

Illustrated with many fascinating photographs, the book includes introductions to each section by Merlin Holland (Oscar's grandson), Owen Dudley Edwards, Declan Kiberd and Terence Brown. A comprehensive bibliography of works by and about Oscar Wilde together with a chronological table of his life and work are also included. I at once pictured to myself a creature with spectacles and lank hair, horribly freckled, and tramping about on huge feet. A portrait like this would set you far above all the young men in England, and make the old men quite jealous, if old men are ever capable of any emotion. So, for example, when I read this essay I find it fascinating: Wilde is witty (duh), charming, intelligent and erudite and his argument makes sense - until I remember that some realist novels have, in my life, packed just as much impact as the imaginative ones.

The masses feel that drunkenness, stupidity, and immorality should be their own special property, and that if any one of us makes an ass of himself, he is poaching on their preserves. His tales are entertaining too, though I disliked the ones he wrote for children (for me -personally- all unsuited and complete failure). His work is wonderful, but, in this special edition, you can find everything he wrote, even the poems (which are not so good as his other works to me). The edition will also include an annotated bibliography of the vast array of dubious works attributed to Wilde in the decades following his death. where a nobleman (Lord Savile, natch) has his palm read and is told he will commit murder in the future. But this book was great because I had had no idea about some of his shorter stories and poems and plays and found new favorites! The COMPLETE poetry, with special Chronological and Alphabetical contents tables – find that special poem quickly!A Few Maxims For The Instruction Of The Over-Educated" [3] First published, anonymously, in the 1894 November 17 issue of Saturday Review. His first and only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’, was published in 1891 and received quite a negative response.

Wilde believes this idea is terrible and sketches out what he believes literature (and almost almost all art) should consist of, how it should proceed and what its goals should be.You never open your lips while you are painting, and it is horribly dull standing on a platform and trying to look pleasant. Upon my word, Basil, I didn’t know you were so vain; and I really can’t see any resemblance between you, with your rugged strong face and your coal-black hair, and this young Adonis, who looks as if he was made out of ivory and rose-leaves. Book in very good clean condition with some small marks on front and back cover [please see picture]. They seemed to be able to give a plastic form to formless things, and to have a music of their own as sweet as that of viol or of lute. The Philosophy of Dress" First published in The New-York Tribune (1885), published for the first time in book form in Oscar Wilde On Dress (2013).
