About this deal

I just re-read some of the first pages of this discussion, (Part One), and see that yes, others have noticed this and commented on it. Penny’s characters and settings are real and recognisable and give depth to her stories that other mysteries lack. Julia in particular is dreading it, and during an illicit smoke outside one evening, she confides to Gamache that her family makes her miserable. Chef Véronique and maître d’ Pierre make a point of hiring new, English-speaking people every year to help them learn French.

The character of Bean himself draws attention to him/herself only to disappoint readers that he/she was of no particular significance other than proving a philosophical point and a roof top ending. Since he came from Julia’s area of Vancouver, I felt that it was as likely as not that his parents had lost a lot of money in Julia’s husband’s Madoff/pyramid scheme. Agatha and Anthony Award-winning author Louise Penny breathes new life into the classic drawing-room mystery.I couldn’t help but note, in passing, that I read this in the week following the GOP’s confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh into the US Supreme Court. Sandra: Thomas’ wife, seemingly bursting at the seams with insecurity and unhappiness and constantly making unreasonable demands on the staff of the Manoir Bellechasse.

Their stay coincides with another event, the Finney-Morrow family reunion, for which the family has taken the rest of the rooms in the lodge. The Morrows seemed to believe there was a special code that allowed them to say what they liked about others, deliberately within their hearing, without it’s being discourteous. I mean, even if Pierre said, hey, stand right here and she did it, he had to move to the other side of the statue and shove it. Beauvoir often points out features of the English Canadian culture that are in stark contrast to his own French Canadian culture. As for LP point--well, she is Canadian and since her novels are very much wrapped up in local history, I would assume she would use Canadian settings/politics.

So, here's a stupid conversation I had with my mom last week while we were sitting in the waiting room between doctor's appointments. A thoroughly enjoyable murder mystery with many, intriguing, layers of human experiences intertwined. I think that is really what I love most about Penny's writing; she takes the unusual and crafts it into a compelling mystery peppered with well crafted, totally believeable characters.

It is one of the finest auberges (inns) in Quebec, a place to rest, unwind, and quietly enjoy each other’s company. Gamache, who has always believed himself to be reconciled with his father’s legacy, must grapple with the fact that he still has far to go in the quest to fully forgive his father. Gamache and Beauvior spend a good bit of time puzzling over why Julia had her arms outstretched, as if she were hugging the statue to her.
