About this deal

When first jumping into the world of watch collecting, the idea of complications can prove, well, complicated. Although there are several solid bargain three-hand options for those looking for their first mechanical timepiece, once one begins adding functions to that basic design, prices have a tendency to rise aggressively. GMT models have long been some of the worst offenders for this, and despite their popularity, the entry-level GMT market has historically been disappointingly sparse. Seiko’s highest-profile launch of the summer aims to blow the affordable GMT market wide open, and in old-school Seiko fashion the watch delivers value in spades. Our aBlogtoWatch team has a chance to review this piece thanks to Watch Nation, the sole supplier for this model in the UK, which graciously provided our team with a sample. The new Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK005K1 has already established itself as one of the most talked-about releases of 2022, and delivers a truly accessible mechanical GMT experience fit for new collectors and veterans alike. Friend we’d recommend it to first: Enthusiasts of all stripes looking for a genuinely affordable mechanical GMT, new collectors looking to dip their toes into mechanical complications.

The introduction of this trio of GMTs in the Seiko 5 line up is also interesting given that this is the first time the brand has included a GMT movement in its entry level collection. The movement is new, though it is based off the brand’s tried and tested 4R35 movement, with an added module for the independent GMT hand. When I first saw the release of these GMT watches, I got rather excited because I thought that they were “traveller’s GMT” movements, which would have been absolutely revolutionary, since the movements would likely also have made their way to many watches offered by microbrands. That said, despite these being “caller GMT” movements, they still represent a very different option for fans of this collection, and would probably also be one of the best value for money GMT watches you could get, since the alternatives are ETA/Sellitta GMT powered watches which are significantly more expensive. We understand the importance of sizing the length of your watch bracelet or strap to provide the perfect fit. Our simple to use watch sizing guide allows you to measure the size of your wrist from the comfort of your own home. Watch sizing can only be generally carried out on watches with metal bracelets, steel, titanium, gold, etc. What do you make of these new Seiko GMTs? Will you be adding one (or all three) to your collection when they launch, or will you steer clear altogether? I think you know how I feel about these. But all in all, it’s hard not to be excited about Seiko offering such an affordable GMT in the iconic SKX case. Make sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments below. First released in the 90s, the SKX Seiko 5 Sports watches were a modernised version of the classics – updating the reliability and durability of the 1960s originals. The 90s collection offered improved practicality – enhanced water resistance, strengthened crystals along with luminous hands and hour markers. These wearable, loveable values still stay strong in today’s modernised Seiko 5 Sports designs. When reviewer would personally wear it: As a daily-wear beater with personality, or during days with multiple international calls. Speaking of the price, while they are not as affordable as you would have expected from a Seiko 5 line, you would be hard pressed to find alternative GMT watches at this price range. This strategically still keeps these watches in line with the more accessible philosophy behind the Seiko 5 line, though whether that holds true when other microbrands get access to this movement remains to be seen. This timepiece is presented on a solid stainless steel jubilee bracelet that showcases both brushed and polished finishes. It fastens through the use of a fold over push deployment clasp. It also features a diver’s extension.

The famous SKX (released in 1996) became a modern icon for Seiko. Owning or having owned an SKX was (and arguably still is) something that most collectors and watch enthusiasts proudly share. However, with 200m of water resistance, the SKX was a proper dive watch. And after its discontinuation only a couple of years ago, calling the wide selection of Seiko 5 models with a similar case “SKXs” doesn’t feel quite right. However, they still offer a value proposition for those looking to step into the world of mechanical watches. Now, with the addition of a GMT feature, these new Seiko 5 GMT Series watches go beyond what I could have hoped for as a budding watch enthusiast all those years ago. And though I’m not a veteran quite yet, I feel pretty excited about this release. As you’ve seen, these new Seiko 5 GMT models have all the ingredients necessary to become a crowd favorite. Perhaps not a classic like the SKX, but I’m open to being proven wrong — only time will tell. In the meantime, I’m sure you’re wondering about when and where you can get your hands on one of these watches and how much it will cost. Well, in short, these Seiko 5 GMT Series models will be available at selected Seiko Boutiques and other retail stores all over the world in July 2022. The price will be €470 (approx. European price). The bi-colour 24-hour bezel is coated in Hardlex, to ensure durability while the GMT hand improves practicality, visibility and legibility. The ‘beads of rice’ bracelet remains true to the SKX heritage with a ‘five-piece link’ design that forms a series of small X-shaped patterns. All three watches (much like the SKX) come on the latest version of the ubiquitous Seiko Jubilee-style bracelet. This has been noticeably improved from the one found on the old SKX models. We did a side-by-side comparison, and the new steel bracelet feels much more solid and qualitative both on and off the wrist. If you require an extra large bracelet or you are in need of additional links these may be supplied at an additional cost. Best characteristic of watch: Reasonable pricing, handsome design, impressively robust and capable movement for the price.
