About this deal

As a man writing in a woman's voice, Cleave isn't completely successful but he is masterful in wringing eloquence out of simple lives. You have also shown me how, through the eyes of Terence Butcher and our heroines husband the responsibility of our safety can be felt and how our Security Forces view the world, their day at work can be a living hell in comparison to mine.

Then for Sarah to welcome her, share the joy and love of Charlie, to offer safe harbor…those things made a difference in the life of Little Bee. The first one is a good idea -- new information about 'May Day' comes to light -- but what he does with it (the plan is for Jasper and Petra to get it published in their newspaper) is just ridiculous. So when Dez is taken captive by the infamous Sangrado Prince, Renata feels she has no choice but to infiltrate the place she once thought of as home. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The narrator’s feeling for husband and son are simply props in a series of scenes written for a bad actress. But even leaving aside the psychological issues, she and her buddies (Jasper, Petra, Butcher) all drink way too much (and, in some cases, consume too many drugs): it may be true to life but is also boring as hell. We know from pretty early on that the Whispers have a spy in the Palace and we then spend the next 75-90% of the book trying to work out who it could be. Living in London, and having a 5 yr old it all seemed so real, the streets and people familiar that it left me sharing in the anxiety of the novels main characters. I did not know there was a book, I just finished seeing the movie on Netflix, I have never heard of it. I hoped against hope that she would not be devoured by their dysfunction, but that wasn’t the story you wanted to tell.

This is my absolute favourite kind of fantasy book – one with captivating characters, fascinating worldbuilding and fast-paced, heart-in-your-mouth action. Stolen from her home as a child to be the toy of the Emperor she is rescued at an early age by the Whispers, revolutionary Moria who fight back against the Kingdom that tries to hold them down. When a massive suicide bomb explodes at a London soccer match a woman loses both her four-year-old son and her husband. After the attack, which is memorably described, Cleave’s adherence to the epistolary format comes to seem forced.

Worse is how forced the Osama-premise is, the person she is supposedly addressing essentially forgotten over large stretches of the novel. Now Renata is one of the Whispers, rebel spies working against the crown and helping the remaining Moria escape the kingdom bent on their destruction. The foundation of her character does not want to give back (to anyone) the hate which has been measured on her life. In both you portray women of indomitable strength and optimism even when confronted with painful “bad Luck” of birth and circumstance. It's an idea, a feeling, communicated in the book's opener, set up like you’re starting in the middle of something. We see her struggle through all the stolen memories she holds inside, memories which can force their way into her mind and are impossible to predict. I also appreciated how the author showed the negative effects that using magic could have on the people who used it, as it always feels way too easy if there are no consequences to being able to use magic. I’ve just requested Incendiary from my library and dare not pick it up until I have another free day…I’m fairly convinced all else will be on hold once I start it until the last page is turned. Regarding the attacks I can say nothing that the families of the victims haven’t already said – much more eloquently and poignantly than I ever could – because it is their story.

Just finished Incendiary on the train to work after just a few days of not being able to put it down. The Whispers are the rebellion to this ruthless dominion, constantly hunted or used for his own terrible devices. The deep dive into the palace, rulers, and secrets was most interesting and I feel most thought out. It's a wild journey, and a queasy one, and will make quite a film, with those barrage balloons flying high over the blood-filled Thames. Renata herself cannot remember everything, hiding a lot of her childhood trauma within the Gray, which blocks out her own memories. It starts off with a bang, you’re thrown right into the action but almost immediately slows down and remains that way for the rest of the book.
