Scream VI 4K Blu-ray Review | AVForums

Scream 6 — or, officially, Scream VI — arrives in cinemas a little over a year after 2022's Scream and presents an altogether different challenge. Being a fan of the entire franchise and of the last two entries in the series, I am most definitely walking into Scream VI with a strong favorable bias. But that is par for the course in any franchise, particularly in the horror genre. And frankly, that appears to be the whole point of this delightfully entertaining and surprisingly contemplative fifth sequel where the survivors of the previous movie must now confront the psychological trauma of those events along with facing a new Ghostface killer. In fact, the filmmakers essentially open the film by showing two reactionary extremes to that trauma in the Carpenter sisters, Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega). While one sister prefers to ignore, disregard and refuse to deal with what happened, the other sister copes by becoming overly protective and exceedingly vigilant, seeing danger in every situation. Thankfully, the directors don't clumsily announce this with a heavy hand, but it's the poignantly subtle running theme that informs each character's choices and perspective on their current situation. Much has been made of this being a new kind of Ghostface, seemingly confirmed by the divisive use of a shotgun as seen in the trailers. You'd think it was just a marketing ploy, but the excellent cold open to Scream 6 will make you think otherwise. Most, but not all, sequences are capped with brutal kills, with Ghostface showing a particular penchant this time around for stabbing in various parts of a victim's face. We also get the gory outcome of a dismemberment and a memorable unfortunate landing from a top-floor apartment, if the stabbings aren't bloody enough for you.

Taking a cue from the 4K release of its predecessor, the image on this release gets everything just right. Premiering in March, the sixth instalment will provide the gang of Woodsboro survivors with a little change of scenery. And it looks like Ghostface has had a rough time of it because his mask looks a tad weathered and worn down.

Audio Commentary —Hear from the directors, writers, and executive producer as they dive into the making of the new film.Where Scream 6 excels is in its set pieces. With the new sandbox to play in, we get an unpredictable subway ride (with our heroes split over two trains) and a tense stalk-and-shoot in a bodega. The standout, however, is Gale's showdown with Ghostface, giving Courteney Cox the best sequence she's had in a Scream movie in some time.
