Well unfortunately for the narrator, the (NOT) unicorn and pug make it their mission to be accepted into the story by any means/disguises necessary. My 3 year old was a little confused since it wasn't a typical story but my 5 year old son and 7 year old niece (who is obsessed with Unicorns) found it highly entertaining. The ancient Greeks believed they originally came from Indi, and everyone including Ctesias, Aristotle and Strabo wrote about them. Younger readers may not understand the underlying satire but will appreciate seeing some of their favorite types of characters participate. My unicorn loving 4 year old adored this book - she was in fits of giggles and love the illustrations. As a 3rd grade teacher I LOVE reading stories to my students and find their viewpoints to be incredibly honest. It has the body of a horse, the head of a stag, the feet of an elephant, the tail of a boar, and a single black horn three feet long in the middle of its forehead. This comical and heartfelt picture book is a winning celebration of invention, creativity, and friendship. Unicorn and pug are desperate to be in the story and they do their very best to disguise themselves. Sparkling with voice and charm, this picture book about a fashionable kid out to prove she’s not as small as everyone thinks is perfect for kids eager to grow up, and for those who love to play dress-up.It kinda was all gag though and didn’t really have a story, would have been nice to see these two actually prove why they are awesome and to know their names. However, there have been so many meta children's stories like this in recent years that this one doesn't especially stand out, except for major unicorn fans and kids who, like the book's narrator, are tired of the unicorn trend. I wish “Unicorn Not Wanted” had a bit more of a story or would have at least peppered some facts into the pages (in the way “Nibbles” does) because while it was fun and silly, it had little substance. My daughter, who's 6, loved the fact that the author/ narrator's voice was very present in the book and made her feel very included. This is an anti-unicorn, unicorn story, which pokes fun at the never-ending stream of unicorn books, but then becomes what it sets out not to be.
