I replaced the long cage Tiagra 4700 with a shortcage, and went for the 105 10 speed (5700) which you would think would be a straight swap... It's not.

While bikes with Shimano Tiagra are usually substantially cheaper than those equipped with 105, the margin between the cost of components is often a lot smaller please note, that the new rear derailleur geometry follows the design of the 11speed groupsets, and, it is for a longer cable pull with decreased derailleur actuation ratio. Therefore, the shifting is less sensitive to cable stretch and the extra friction of the concealed cable routing of the shifters. Tiagra brakes have also seen a good amount of improvement and an increase in stopping power. However, they aren't of the same quality as 105. The other major difference between the two groupsets is that the 105 brakes are considerably better than Tiagra ones. They are a real highlight both in terms of all-out power and fingertip control. Are the latest Tiagra rear derailleurs compatible with 105 (5700) 10 sp. shifters? (And vice versa, ie are new Tiagra shifters OK to work with a 5700 105 derailleur?)

If you need to make adjustments, on both levers this can be done using a screw-operated system. This is especially useful for those with a shorter reach or smaller hands are you are then able to move the levers to be closer to you. An impressive feature is how streamlined the 105 R7000 STI units are in comparison to old versions.

Whereas gear cables used to come out of the side of the shifter body and arc externally to the frame, the 4700 shifter cables are routed under the bar tape. However, a triple chainset is only available with Tiagra so that is something Tiagra has over 105.
