Two days before Thanksgiving, the Springfield community plans to gather to dedicate the Roseann Bentley Musical Playground and honor the longtime public servant for whom it is named. The installation includes a circular concrete pad, park benches, and a connection to the park's footpath. The fragrance announces its uncompromising extravagance within just a few seconds. After several minutes, the heart note unfolds, with elegant woody aromas of papyrus, Atlas cedar and sandalwood – extremely powerful and masculine. The base note includes the most seductive essences in the world of fragrances: beguiling Oud, surrounded by sensuous ambergris and elegant harmonies of moss. She taught kindergarten and first grade and served on the Springfield school board as well as the state school board. She also served on the National Association of State Boards of Education and the Parents As Teachers National Board.

Bentley was the first woman elected to the state senate from southwest Missouri, representing the Springfield area from 1995 to 2003. Bentley helped found Ozarks Public Television in the early 1970s and the United Way of the Ozarks Day of Caring in 1993. Interactive and fully accessible, the space will feature playground-grade instruments including xylophones, drums and other percussive tones, built in colorful shapes of flowers and trees. The "pencil shaving" cedar note familiar from so many other ISO E-heavy scents is on full display here, and this might be the strongest I've ever encountered it - it's a bone dry, almost desiccated rendition of extreme woodiness. Fortunately, the pepper, ginger, and frankincense round this out with a subtle sweetness that emerges in the drydown and adds depth to what feels like it will be a linear ride. Instead, the aggressive darkness of the opening gradually softens. This is an EDP that wears pretty close to the skin and it's never loud, but the semi-sweet warmth at the heart of the scent persists quite well even as the dry wood burns away.Construction of the interactive play space — a first for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board — started in mid-October and is expected to finish next week, weather permitting. In reality, Absolute is supposedly the resurrection of the long discontinued Gucci Pour Homme, also by Michel Almairac and featuring nearly identical notes. I haven't tried GPH and can't comment other than to say I love this scent for what it is. CPO president and CEO Janet Dankert said, at the time, that the project was the "perfect way to recognize" and to honor the longtime champion for children and early childhood education.

Bentley was a founding member of the CPO Board of Directors, serving more than 20 years including a stint as the board president in 2009. Nearly a year ago, the Community Partnership of the Ozarks spearheaded the effort to raise funds for the musical playground, in partnership with the park board. She was on the statewide Families and Community Trust, or FACT, board for more than 10 years. She represented CPO and helped shape other community partnerships across Missouri.
