About this deal

Over the course of the book I laughed and I cried, I wanted to shake characters and I punched the air in delight. This was as enjoyable as any of her other books that I've read over the last 20 years with a few exceptions. It has taken me 3 months to read – simply because I wanted to stretch my reading time to as long as possible, because I didn’t want to finish reading the book. From wild parties at Newbury and Ludlow, to an overnight of musical beds at Stratford, to the thrills and spills of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, one fling leads to another and another.

Classic Cooper: either the perfect beach read or else something to curl up on the sofa with to keep out the encroaching autumn chill.

Etta Bancroft – sweet, kind, still beautiful – adores racing and harbours a crush on one of its stars, the handsome high-handed owner-trainer Rupert Campbell-Black.

doesn't compare to my memory of Riders, Polo or The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous, but the last 300 pages are classic Jilly. All of them have simply brilliant characters (in fact, it is often easier to tell apart the animals than the humans) and it was the sad moments involving the horses that had me close to tears! you will meet rich, capricious owners, obsessive trainers, gallant stable lads and lasses and tough, brave jockeys; you will fall in love with the horses, and above all with Mrs Wilkinson herself - hilarious, heroic and gutsy, she will gallop into your heart forever. you will meet rich, capricious owners, obsessive trainers, gallant stable lads and lasses and tough, brave jockeys; you will fall in love with the horses, and above all with Mrs Wilkinson herself – hilarious, heroic and gutsy, she will gallop into your heart forever. It's been a fair while since I've read a Jilly Cooper novel but I was soon back into the swing of things, laughing like a drain in places and wanting to give the downtrodden Etta a good shake as she's bullied by her selfish children. The heroine is also a classic type, though rather older than the wide-eyed teenagers Cooper usually favours.

As for me I’m not giving up on Cooper, I’ll read the next novel in the series, I’m confident it will be as much fun as the other novels in the series and well worth the read. you will meet rich capricious owners, obsessive trainers and gallant stable lads and lasses; you will get to know the tough, brave jockeys; and you will fall in love with the horses, and above all with Mrs Wilkinson herself - hilarious , heroic and so gutsy she will gallop into your heart forever. They provided some structure to the book and gave the opportunity for Jilly to explore all matters jump racing.
