Several drummers were auditioned before finally recruiting Andy Watts, who had previously gigged with Fletcher and also knew Helme. [5] The Seahorses had a lot of success with their debut album " Do It Yourself". It reached No2 in the UK album charts in May 1997 and would produce three top 20 singles but dispite the stand alone single " You Can Talk To Me" also getting top 20 status (reaching 15) there would be no more official releases from the band.I have been looking for this album for a long-time. The Seahorses - Do It Yourself - Reviews - Album of The Year

Squire later commented on his reasons for ending the band that "I thought 'This sounds shit, we don't deserve to be in this place.' The band sounded complacent. I don't suppose it was anyone's fault. Maybe it got far too much attention for very little effort in the early stages, because of what I'd done in the past." [18] He also added that the "band wasn't working out cos the singer, Chris, wanted to pursue a solo career in tandem, there was no way that that was going to work for me". [19] Post-breakup [ edit ] Oh man! For years I've been hoping for someone to remaster these recordings. ;_; This is one of my favourite albums albeit being bunch of demos and clearly missing lots of Squire's guitar work. Personally I think this is a better album as is than Do It Yourself was... but that's maybe because I judge music mostly by the atmosphere / the mood. Keep up the good work!! Ryan, Gavin (2011). In January 1999 the band began recording their second album (under the working title of Minus Blue/Motocade) at the Olympic Studios with producer David Bottrill but the sessions were abandoned after guitarist and songwriter John Squire walked out of the studio and didn't return. The band's split was officially announced on 23rd January 1999, with a press release citing musical differences. It would later become apparant that it was tensions between lead singer and songwriter Chris Helm and Squire that came to a head which lead to the walkout and the end of The Seahorses. Following the split of The Shining, Heaney carried on working as a drum teacher and session musician, appearing on Squire's first solo album Time Changes Everything. He joined post-punk icons Gang of Four in 2005, and continued working as a session drummer for artists such as Badly Drawn Boy and Klaxons. [21] and many others. Squire formed the Seahorses in 1996 following his departure from the Stone Roses. He first recruited bassist Stuart Fletcher, who he saw by chance at the Fibbers venue in York where he was drinking with his guitar tech Martin Herbet. Fletcher was playing in local covers band, The Blueflies, as a last-minute replacement for the band's regular bass player who had pulled out of the gig. Squire then auditioned two singers – Sean O'Brien, previously of Warrington band the Steamboat Band, [3] and Chris Helme, who was spotted by a friend of Squire's guitar tech busking outside Woolworths in York. Following several auditions and the prompting of his manager, Squire eventually settled on Helme, despite being hesitant because he "closed his eyes when he sang and only folk singers do that". [4] While Helme was a songwriter too, Squire admitted early on that despite liking a couple of Helme's songs – including "Blinded by the Sun", which he re-arranged for the album – "Yeah, he can write the odd tune but I don't really like them and it might be a problem later on if he wants to record them with the band".
