About this deal

Compared to the Oppo Pad Air, the Redmi Pad SE has the benefit of driving a lower-resolution display. Conversely, it boasts a much faster 90Hz refresh rate which, as hinted at earlier, it can’t quite make the most of. Xiaomi does everything right with the design. It looks like a typical tablet with a metal case, because that’s what it is. They add their own touch with a large rectangular camera module. It feels premium built, but the transition from display to the body is not as premium as on premium devices. All in all, it’s nothing but negative on the camera front. However, like I said at the outset, that doesn’t really matter all that much on a cheap tablet. Just do everyone a favour and use your smartphone for any snaps. Software Basemark GPU 1.2: Vulkan Medium Native | 1920x1080 Vulkan Medium Offscreen | OpenGL Medium Native | 1920x1080 OpenGL Medium Offscreen 3DMark / Wild Life Extreme Unlimited It’s very disappointing that the multi-window mode doesn’t work. At least with the 3GB RAM version. It’s also not a good choice if you’re looking for a tablet with an active stylus or a good keyboard cover, as neither are available.

As for that 5MP front camera, don’t expect it to be good for anything other than basic video calls. Detail is a write-off, focus is rotten, and skin tones are well wide of the mark. It also defaults to an eery beautifying effect, which will smudge those skin tones further. With a resolution of 1920 x 1200, it’s not as pixel-dense as the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8’s smaller screen, and even less so not the Oppo Pad Air’s 10.36-inch 2000 x 1200 panel. It’s plenty sharp enough for Full HD video streaming and web browsing though, which is what you’ll be doing most of the time. It’s a good job the stamina is so strong, because the Redmi Pad SE only supports up to 10W wired charging. For such a large battery, that’s awful, and pretty much necessitates an overnight charge. The front of the tablet looks even more generic, of course, with nothing but a uniform bezel running around an 11-inch display. Those bezels are relatively slim, with the Redmi Pad SE boasting an 84.4% screen-to-body ratio, which pips the Oppo by a single percentage point. Currently, Android 12 is preinstalled and the tablet supports all common Android features. Well, except for one, more on that in a moment. The main camera has a resolution of 8 MP and also supports video recording at up to 1080p with 30 FPS. Like the selfie camera, it shines with a good video quality under good lighting conditions, which takes a big hit in low-light situations due to significant image noise. The same holds true for pictures. However, it’s not perfect. Especially the graphics performance could be a good bit better. Therefore, I cannot recommend it as a gaming tablet. It’s also less suitable for working or studying, since there is neither an official keyboard cover nor an active pen. While the Xiaomi Redmi Pad is a good tablet in the sub-300-USD category, the price is still slightly too high for us to recommend it unequivocally. Meanwhile, the in-house competitor Xiaomi Pad 5 comes with significantly better features, while not being substantially more expensive.

If you already have the first Redmi Pad, it is definitely not worth upgrading. The SE is not designed for that. The two are very, very similar. It pays off too, with the kind of stamina that doesn’t seem to dissipate over multiple days of light usage, even with the display set to go up to 90Hz.The Redmi Pad SE looks and feels like a high-quality tablet. We get a metal body that is 7.36mm thin and weighs 478g. The transition from the display to the casing is not as high-quality as on the iPad Pro, but overall the build quality is great. Xiaomi offers it in lavender purple, graphite gray and mint green. Xiaomi is about to ditch MIUI entirely and start afresh, so hopefully it’s got something better up its sleeve. Whether cheap devices like the Redmi Pad SE will benefit from that upgrade remains to be seen, but there is the promise of two years of OS updates, so you have to hope that it will. Battery Life These cheap full-sized tablets are very much intended to be portable media players, of course, so it’s appropriate that we bring audio into the conversation here. The Redmi Pad SE gives you a strong quad-speaker set-up that supports Dolby Atmos output, and it provides impressively loud, punchy sound for the price. There are four speaker slots punched into the sides and the sound quality is solid. The speakers sound nice and loud. However, the bass is stronger in the S6 Lite in a direct comparison. Still, for YouTube and Netflix, the sound is good. Since the tablet has a Widevine level of L1, you can watch Netflix with HD resolution. Android 12: Three years of updates

The Redmi Pad is equipped with a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, which is supported by 3GB, 4GB or 6GB of RAM. You can choose between 64GB and 128GB storage when buying it, but there is no version with 5G or LTE. I bought the cheapest version. MIUI 13 not only allows for apps to be run in fullscreen mode, but also in a windowed view that allows multiple apps to be open simultaneously. Additionally, two app windows can be automatically aligned to take up half the screen, each. Using this feature requires the 4-GB version of the tablet (or higher), however, since the 3-GB model does not support split view. The performance is good for this price range and it’s a solid lower-mid-range gaming tablet. Overall, it is a great tablet as long as two things don’t bother you. It helps that it comes in three colours, two of which (Lavender Purple and Mint Green) are quite interesting for a cheap tablet. Typically, I was sent the Graphite Gray model, which is much more professional (read: boring) looking.

Just like the Oppo Pad Air, the Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 680. Just like that rival, it’s not quite enough to provide a sufficiently fluid experience.

Gaming - 30 FPS Even in Demanding Games

We recommend going for the larger 4/128GB memory configuration, since the price premium over the entry-level 64/3GB model is only 10 USD. The latter is just marginally cheaper and does not offer split view for simultaneously running two apps next to each other. The Redmi Pad runs Android 12 with Xiaomi's own MIUI user interface version 13.1. The manufacturer does not include a lot in terms of extra software. Aside from the Google applications and a small collection of Xiaomi tools, only the two third-party apps WPS Office and Netflix - both of which can be removed - come preinstalled. Thanks to DRM Widevine L1 support, the tablet can be used to stream HD-quality content. The Redmi Pad SE runs Android 13 out of the box, including the Google Play Store. And MIUI version 14 sits on top of Android, which is exactly the same software that we already know from the simple Redmi Pad thanks to updates, but also roughly from the Xiaomi Pad 5 and 6. The Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE is a nicely built full-sized tablet that might have you raising your eyebrows in surprise when you see the price tag, at least if you weren’t aware of the Oppo Pad Air or the Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 before it.
