About this deal

I think this was Jeffery Archer’s first book and it reads like it should be. The word that comes to mind is ‘farcical’. Was Resistance, Rebellion and Death our motto? No. Leave that to our Union bosses - and they were rife in that place.

Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was Jeffrey Archer's first novel, first published in 1976. It was said to have been inspired by Archer's real-life experience of near- bankruptcy.Cause most of us start out that way, but not insecure me. I started weak, gradually worked up a heavy head of steam, and, in retirement fell down deep - eventually, into the perfect peace of a clear conscience. This is the book this is apparently based on his own experience as Archer was himself made bankrupt in the 1970s however in light of subsequent events about him I guess I would not readily buy into him being an innocent victim. Ah, those Milton Friedman eighties, replete in a very wet summer with a bumper crop of towering fungi - the grabbers, takers and brutal levellers of the Me Generation.

The conned: an Oxford don, a revered society physician, a chic French art dealer, and a charming English lord. They have one thing in common. Overnight, each novice investor lost his life’s fortune to one man. The con: Harvey Metcalfe. A brilliant, self-made guru of deceit. A very dangerous individual. And now, a hunted man. Harvey Metcalfe, a Polish immigrant to the United States, rises from messenger boy to corporate magnate, combining business skills with little loyalty and much ruthlessness. Over 40 years, he has mastered the shady deal, and by the 1960s is a multi-millionaire. Ironically the BBC parodied their own adaptation in arts programme The Late Show where they reduced it to two minutes which was actually just as good, if not better and certainly cheaper. Among the various things I liked about Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less by Jeffrey Archer is the way the plot unfolds; the author gives the reader just a brief picture of the plans before each of the them are carried out. And when the plans actually unfold they are simply brilliant! It keeps the reader intrigued and in anticipation. The plans are so meticulous and perfectly timed that it seems like a scene from a thrilling movie! MAKING A MILLION legally has always been difficult. Making a million illegally has always been a little easier. Keeping a million when you have made it is perhaps the most difficult of all. Henryk Metelski was one of those rare men who had managed all three. Even if the million he had made legally came after the million he had made illegally, Metelski was still a yard ahead of the others, he had managed to keep it all.

With nothing left to lose four strangers are about to come together — each expert in their own field. Their plan: find Harvey, shadow him, trap him, and penny-for-penny, destroy him. From the luxurious casinos of Monte Carlo to the high-stakes windows at Ascot to the bustling streets of Wall Street to fashionable London galleries, their own ingenious game has begun. It’s called revenge — and they were taught by a master. Harvey's third love was his prize collection of orchids, and he had three times been a winner at the New England Spring Flower Show in Boston, twice beating old man Hunter into second place.

In the early days of my reading, this book had become a catalyst in my discovery of joy of reading. So, I did recommend to read this to the students of the book club, who have started on a similar journey. I hope they like it as much as I did then. M AKING A MILLION legally has always been difficult. Making a million illegally has always been a little easier. Keeping a million when you have made it is perhaps the most difficult of all. Henryk Metelski was one of those rare men who had managed all three. Even if the million he had made legally came after the million he had made illegally, Metelski was still a yard ahead of the others: he had managed to keep it all. Nothing. Useless. And now we have started on the others I seem to have less time to concentrate on my own."

Making a million legally has always been difficult. Making a million illegally has always been a little easier. Keeping a million when you have made it is perhaps the most difficult of all.”Harvey couldn't believe it. How easy it would be to use such a license to create the impression of a vast enterprise! For a few hundred dollars he could be alongside such names as Shell, B.P., Total, Gulf and Occidental. Masa zaman belajar dulu, kawan sekelas aku sorang ni suka collect buku Jeffrey Archer. She recommended me this book and I'm hooked with Jeffrey Archer's books. Not A Penny More, Not Penny Less diterbitkan sekitar 1974. So bila baca buku ni mesti membayangkan suasana dan prasarana sekitar tahun2 yang begitu lah. Tak der alat komunikasi moden. The conned: an Oxford don, a revered society physician, a chic French art dealer, and a charming English lord. They have one thing in common. Overnight, each novice investor lost his life's fortune to one man. The con: Harvey Metcalfe!! This is Jeffrey Archer’s first book. And what a great book it is! I have read it during my teenage years and decided to re-read again. Everybody is so stiff upper lip English even the American and French characters manage that peculiar English affectation.
