Jennifer Harris, "The Red Cap of Liberty: A Study of Dress Worn by French Revolutionary Partisans 1789-94" Eighteenth-Century Studies 14.3 (Spring 1981:283–312), fig. 1. Most of the details that follow are drawn from here. The Phrygian cap ( / ˈ f r ɪ dʒ( iː) ən/ FRIJ-(ee)-ən) or liberty cap is a soft conical cap with the apex bent over, associated in antiquity with several peoples in Eastern Europe and Anatolia, including the Persians, the Medes and the Scythians, as well as in the Balkans, Dacia, Thrace and in Phrygia, where the name originated. [1] The oldest depiction of the Phrygian cap is from Persepolis in Iran.

The headgear that we see the Smurfs wearing has a long, long history. Twenty-four hundred years ago, there are depictions of the cap. King Midas is often portrayed wearing a Phrygian cap. In one iteration of his legend, he judges a playing contest between Apollo and Pan; he sides with Pan and is given donkey ears. Because he has “ass” ears, he wears the cap to cover them up. In the Belgian comic franchise The Smurfs, the eponymous Smurfs are typically depicted wearing Phrygian-like caps. [22]

The republican associations with the bonnet rouge were adopted as the name and emblem of a French satirical republican and anarchist periodical published between 1913 and 1922 by Miguel Almereyda that targeted the Action française, a royalist, counter-revolutionary movement on the extreme right.

Phrygian cap | Definition, History, & Facts". Encyclopedia Britannica . Retrieved 11 November 2020.The symbols resurfaced again during the July Revolution of 1830, after which they were reinstated by the liberal July Monarchy of Louis Philippe I, and the revolutionary symbols—anthem, holiday, and bonnet rouge—became "constituent parts of a national heritage consecrated by the state and embraced by the public." [15] In modern France [ edit ] In the 2011 Smurfs movie, the Smurfs use their hats as parachutes to slow their descent when leaping from the window of the Winslow's' apartment building in New York City to a nearby taxicab. The Winslow child Blue wears a hospital cap in a manner similar to a Smurf hat. They're often considered symbols of liberty and were once found on the tops of Liberty Poles. You can see one on the seal of the United States Senate as well. 5. Because the Smurfs shared all of their possessions, some people thought this was a barely veiled attempt to brainwash children into Communist ways.

It's Smurf time! You will triumph at the next Carnival or costume party with your Smurf costume. If you're going as a couple, you could show off a Smurfette costume and your favourite Smurf costume (Grouchy Smurf, Brainy Smurf...) or put on a Papa Smurf costume to be the wisest Smurf in the Smurf Village. Remember, there are Smurf costumes for all the family: for babies, kids or adults. Everyone will get the chance to paint their skin blue. Of course, some people also thought the Phrygian hats meant that the Smurfs were a sect of the Ku Klux Klan, and others claimed the Smurfs were neo-Nazis promoting an Aryan race because of the lone, blonde female in the group. In fact, none of those things were true. Peyo's son has stated that the Smurfs had no political undertones at all, and the only messages his father wished to impart were those of friendship and love. 6. Karenna Gore's Secret Service code name was Smurfette, which she has apparently regretted ever since. Gale, Robert L. In the shown picture from The Smurfs And The Magic Flute, one of the Smurfs doffs his hat to a nest of birds after they have successfully transferred the nest from the tree they were going to cut down for making the second magic flute onto another tree. a b c McClung Fleming, E. The U.S. Army has, since 1778, used a " War Office Seal" in which the motto "This We'll Defend" is displayed directly over a Phrygian cap on an upturned sword. It also appears on the state flags of West Virginia and Idaho [18] (as part of their official seals), New Jersey, and New York, as well as the official seal of the United States Senate, the state of Iowa, the state of North Carolina (as well as the arms of its Senate, [19]) and on the reverse side of both the Seal of Pennsylvania and the Seal of Virginia. Cf. Appian, Civil Wars 2:119: "The murderers wished to make a speech in the Senate, but as nobody remained there they wrapped their togas around their left arms to serve as shields, and, with swords still reeking with blood, ran, crying out that they had slain a king and tyrant. One of them bore a cap on the end of a spear as a symbol of freedom, and exhorted the people to restore the government of their fathers and recall the memory of the elder Brutus and of those who took the oath together against ancient kings."
