About this deal

I didn’t set out to write a story about orphans as such. I suppose the main thing I really wanted to write about was a group of ‘misfits’ who refuse to conform to what society deems acceptable or normal…. a group of children who empower each other, see their own worth, and carve out their own story rather than be forced to conform to someone else’s. I also wanted something that united them with an unbreakable bond, and I guess this is where the orphan trope came in. And given the time period I was writing about, it seemed logical to write them in this way. In the absence of a guiding adult figure, they had to navigate this journey themselves...” Half Dutch, half English, Hana Tooke grew up near Amsterdam and moved to the south of England at the age of twelve. After completing a degree in music, and then a PGCE, Hana was a primary school teacher for several years. Hana also completed the Bath Spa University Writing for Young People MA, and The Unadoptables was shortlisted for The Bath Children's Novel Award 2018. A corker of a story. I loved the writing, the setting, the STUPENDOUS action scenes, how well-paced it was, with such drama, revelations, plot twists and the loveliest of final lines... and one of the most satisfying endings I've read in a long while, with the promise of more in the epilogue. Bravo, Hana - what a book! Emma Carroll, author of Letters to the Lighthouse

There is no denying that Hana Tooke can write. There is, however, the need to question whether or not she should. Especially when she writes books that, despite their well-written words and descriptions, are harmful to the very children she is writing for. Effortlessly merging the gothic and ghastly with the eccentric and absurd, Hana Tooke's mesmerising debut sends a quintet of abandoned orphans off on a caper across nineteenth-century Amsterdam, complete with sinister supervillains, heart-in-mouth cliff-hangers and lashings of evocative period flavour. Waterstones Blog, 'Best Books to Look Out For in 2020' Can you drop any hints about what does happen next? Will there be a sequel? Are you going to write a book for each character? Edda appeared quite late into the process (draft three or four, I think), as I was struggling with the ‘soggy middle’ of my story. I knew I needed something/someone new when the orphans arrive at Poppenmill, but for a long while I couldn’t work out what/who exactly. A bit like the original seed of the story, when Edda did finally arrive, she was as clear as day, arms crossed and raising that eyebrow at me as if to say: ‘it’s about time you finally spotted me, now let’s get on with it shall we?’ Edda completely transformed the story, not just in terms of plot but the effect she had on the orphans’ vividness, especially Milou and Lotta. So, in that respect, I think she was probably the most surprising AND the most enjoyable character to write.

Hana Tooke weaves in all the elements of a classic children's story: orphans, evil villains, and a gang of friends. Yet she somehow changes it up, bringing in a twist of suspense and passion while still keeping to the classic themes. ‘ Our director of public affairs, Alison Woodhead, gives her take on The Unadoptables, a new children’s book which has come in for criticism in the adoption community.

The Unadoptables - Penguin Books UK

The experience of reading The Unadoptables feels very visual. Did you ‘see’ it as you were writing? Have films and TV dramas had any impact on your book?

Yes, what an excellent message for children, that if you have a difference and disability or are the wrong race that NO ONE WILL WANT YOU. It’s a white ableist fairy tale!

The Unadoptables by Hana Tooke | Goodreads

Deep in the heart of Amsterdam sits a tall, narrow house. This is the Little Tulip Orphanage, a place of minimal suppers and very strict rules. Everything – including abandonment – is regulated. Which character did you enjoy writing about the most, and why? Which character surprised you the most? Which was the most challenging to write about? A book to absolutely fall in love with." Cerrie Burnell, author of T he Girl with the Shark's Teeth The Unadoptables follows the narrative of Milou, resident storyteller, promising mystery solver and twelve year old miniature mother hen. Milou fiercely cares for her found brothers and sisters, often accepting responsibility for the wonderful childlike malarkey the children of Little Tulip Orphanage create, the Matron is a vile and malicious woman unfit to run a raffle, nevermind a children's orphanage. Milou has tried her damndest to be unadoptable, hanging onto the hope that her parents will return for her when safe to do so, clearly they're on an extremely dangerous adventure, hunting werewolves or hot air balloon aficionados and a catastrophe has befallen them and they'll return as soon as possible, how else would you explain an infant being left on the roof?
