About this deal

Fun Facts: The brand name “Aveeno” is derived from the scientific name for the oat plant “Avena sativa.” Colloidal oatmeal contains intact bran that possesses skin-beneficial actives. The oatmeal we eat for breakfast has the bran removed because it’s tastier without it. Aveeno shaving cream vs. other brands KMF is easier to apply than Cremo, but it doesn’t really reward any further effort. Once you get the hang of how Cremo reacts to water and agitation you can get a closer shave than with KMF, and better protection leading to less irritation. Our testers found that Cremo left the skin feeling softer, too. To many, shaving creams and gels might seem like unnecessary add-ons to an already tedious hair removal routine, however, skin-care experts beg to differ. "Nature didn't intend for us to shave — we developed that social construct — so it's logical that the process 'pisses the hair off,'" explains Connecticut-based board-certified dermatologist Mona Gohara MD. "Shaving cream provides a lubricant to cushion the blow of removing hair." Let’s dig a little deeper and discuss where you can find it, and the different options available based on skin type and scent. Razor bumps are unsightly and painful, but a common problem among shavers. Ingrown hairs cause these pesky bumps.

Botanical extracts (from plants with non-medicinal beneficial properties) can soothe irritation and provide extra moisture for dry skin. Shaving-cream reviewers will sometimes talk about “cushion” and “glide”, but neither of those qualities is well-defined. You can be sure, though, that with some combination of bubbly foam and lubricating fats, the best shaving cream should help keep your razor from scratching or scraping off your skin while it mows down stubble. Gels tend to have more lubricating and hydrating ingredients, but you can typically find a range of additives (along with a range of scents) in both foam and gel cans from the same manufacturer. The Moisturizing Shave Cream claims it gives a comfortable shave, no matter what type of razor you use. This formula contains Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, an anti-inflammatory with healing qualities. Fragrance Since then, we’ve published 70 years of clinical evidence supporting the benefits of oat and other natural ingredients. More recently, our research has been instrumental in advancing the scientific understanding of the microbiome throughout the human body, at every stage of life. Today, AVEENO® scientists are industry experts on the microbial diversity of both healthy and compromised skin.

Our senior researcher for this project has been “wet shaving” with brush and soap for the last 16 years, tinkering with everything from antique straight razors to the Headblade. He’s a shaving nerd to his core.Shaving cream helps get water into your hair, making the hair cells swell into bigger targets for the edge of the razor to hit. Shaving products also provide lubrication for the blade of your razor as it slides across your skin, so it doesn’t cause irritation. Typically, they includes some moisturizing and pH balancing ingredients to keep your skin feeling its best after the blade is gone. Martelli has refined the Proraso formula a few times, most recently to remove parabens from the recipe. The tingle of menthol and eucalyptus (and the corresponding “Italian barbershop” scent) remains. Two curious and innovative brothers, Sidney and Albert Musher, started the Aveeno company in 1945. Aveeno’s original popularity was based on the use of colloidal oatmeal in their bath soak and skin care products. This ingredient still permeates their products today. Some didn’t like the feel of the botanicals (chamomile, witch hazel), but on average this cream tied for second place in skin feel. It’s a great shaving cream, with an inoffensive fragrance reminiscent of Noxzema and other skin creams.

Creams that use more oils and emulsifiers to lubricate and moisturize can clog your razor. You should be able to shave most of your face before you need to rinse, and that should only take a few swishes in a basin. Beiersdorf has been making the Nivea line in Germany since 1911, and shaving cream specifically since the 1930s. Nivea’s Sensitive Shaving Cream is all but unavailable in the US these days (most retailers stopped carrying the tubes in the last couple of years, switching exclusively to the canned gel), but it’s widely available at bargain prices in much of the world. Cremo shaving cream offers a close, smooth shave and claims to leave skin “astonishingly smooth” because of its unique texture. Instead of becoming a lather or foam, the cream mixes with water to create a substance more accurately described as a lubricant.Cons: Some guys might find the peppermint and menthol irritating or annoyed at how long it lingers post-shave. Taylor of Old Bond Street makes shaving cream for people who want a luxurious shave with great scents that leaves skin soft and supple. While Cremo’s best known for its shaving cream, it also has just about everything you could need to care for and maintain your beard, including beard oil, beard serum, beard wash, beard balm, beard cream, beard softener, and even accessories like a beard comb and shaper.
