About this deal

The biggest difference between toslink and spdif is the type of connector that each uses. Toslink uses a rectangular connector, while spdif uses a round connector. The second difference is that toslink is capable of carrying a signal up to 10 meters, while spdif is only capable of carrying a signal up to 5 meters. Finally, toslink supports two-channel stereo audio, while spdif supports up to eight channels of surround sound. The new optical fibre boasts half the signal attenuation per metre of the previous model, which means ‘Performance Graphite comfortably transmits the higher bandwidth signals demanded by today’s multi-channel digital audio links.

TOSLINK - Wikipedia

Toshiba originally created TOSLINK to connect their CD players to the receivers they manufactured, for PCM audio streams. The software layer is based on the "Sony/Philips Digital Interface" [6] [7] ( S/PDIF), while the hardware layer utilizes a fiber optic transmission system, rather than the electrical (copper) hardware layer of S/PDIF. TOSLINK was soon adopted by manufacturers of most CD players. It can often be found on video source (DVD and Blu-ray players, cable boxes and game consoles) to connect the digital audio stream to Dolby Digital/ DTS decoders.Plastic optical fiber is cheap. Count on 1dB/m attenuation. This isn't high-quality glass-core telecom fiber with 1-2dB/km loss! This doesn't matter for a 1m long fiber in your home cinema, but if you need a 100 meter run, coax will be the only option. 75R TV antenna coax is fine. Or better fiber, but not plastic. Connectors are, of course, not compatible.

If better to use the panasonic dac, then should I go ordinary analogue interconnects, or the balanced pin cables? why? Sound card". kioskea.net. Kioskea Network . Retrieved 4 August 2010. The components of a sound card are: [...] An SPDIF digital output (Sony Philips Digital Interface, also known as S/PDIF or S-PDIF or IEC 958 or IEC 60958 since 1998). This is an output line that sends digitised audio data to a digital amplifier using a coaxial cable with RCA connectors at the ends.

Archived from the original (PDF) on 4 June 2014. {{ cite journal}}: Cite journal requires |journal= ( help) AES Convention 121, paper 6948 You’re now aware of what TOSLINK is. What about SPDIF? SPDIF, also known as S/PDIF is a shortened acronym for the Sony/Philips Digital Interface. While Toshiba made a high-fidelity optical cable connection standard, Sony and Philips developed their own propriety cable standard and interface that sometimes makes use of optical cable technology that’s practically synonymous with TOSLINK at this point in time.

a b "Toshiba TOTX1701 TOSLINK Transmitter Module specifications". Archived from the original on 17 July 2011. What SPDIF Brings to the Table: The data link layer protocol known as Sony/Philips Digital Interface is a set of physical layer specifications made to carry digital audio signals between two devices or intermediary components like the AV receiver over an electrical or optical cable. Its SPDIF name actually stands for Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format but it got another moniker that fits the acronym of Sony/Philips Digital Interface. The primary designers of the standard were (obviously) Sony and Philips, with its support to standardize IEC 60958 and IEC 60958 Type II (the ICE 958 before 1998). Finger, Robert A. 1992 'AES3-1992: The RevisedTwo-ChannelDigital Audio Interface', J.AudioEng.Soc.,Vol.40,No. 3, 1992 March, p108 If you’ve ever owned a TV, DVD player, set-top box or soundbar, chances are you’ll have come across either a coaxial, optical or, more recently, an HDMI connection. Those of you with a full-blown surround sound system almost certainly will. It also has to be implemented correctly so it's always running of battery. Many claim they do but in reality they really don't. Sinewave batteries can just produce stable clean power when done correctly, which is often very expensive.

What is TOSLINK? - Definition from Techopedia

They could easily update both to support full bandwidth, all formats but it's all about HDCP, which is a shame. Also, maybe Toshiba invented the original digital toslink connected but both are S/PDIF, which was created by Sony and Philips.(see below). When you speak of optical digital you are referring to the conversion of digital signals to light and transmit signals through fiber optic cables that in turn conduct light. A light receiver on one end receives the light signal and decodes it based on the modulation of light. Even when no music is played but there is power, a red light will always be illuminated.
