About this deal

All of the band's studio albums were reissued as deluxe editions by Edsel Records in October 2012, as well as a new compilation entitled The Rest. Glasgow, the city Deacon Blue formed in, has remained an important part of the band’s identity. Familiar skylines and landmarks feature in much of their album artwork, illustrating the clear sense of nostalgia they feel towards their musical catalyst. The band signed their record deal under the Finnieston Crane, pictured on the cover of ‘Raintown’ and this is echoed in the artwork for, ‘When The World Knows Your Name’ which has a cityscape of Finnieston, taken from the vantage point of nearby Royal Terrace. Ross filled his lyrics with imagery too. ‘Wages Day’ was the anthem inspired by a man lighting a cigar outside a Finnieston newsagent. In ‘Fergus Sings the Blues’ the lyric "...this is my country, these are my reasons..." couldn’t be more poignant, with the Scottish independence referendum approaching this September.

As of 2020, Deacon Blue's total album sales stood at seven million, [5] with twelve UK top 40 singles, along with two number one albums in the UK. Among the sonic reference points are Steely Dan, whose Do It Again is sampled on Silverlake, The Beach Boys ( A Is For Astronaut) and Burt Bacharach ( Rae). Over 200 Gold records have been recorded at Sunset Sound, including albums by the Rolling Stones with the legendary Exile on Main St., The Beach Boys with the landmark Pet Sounds album, Linda Ronstadt with her first disc for David Geffen's Asylum label Don't Cry Now, as well as hit albums for Elton John and Led Zeppelin. The faithful had to wait 11 years for DB’s sixth LP, a gap that could arguably be attributed to the emotional toll exerted on the band by Kelling’s passing.

Reviews

Deacon Blue, in seeking out the answer here rely on the heart rather than the head – and the sweetest melodies emerge from the heart, as illustrated by Birds, Come Awake and the swoonsome instrumental B Boy. Ross and McIntosh dovetail beautifully, as always. Ross seems to have traded his inner Boss for his inner Bono, especially on the histrionic Bethlehem’s Gate and All Over The World. Strong, Martin C. (2002). The Great Scots Musicography: The Complete Guide to Scotland's Music Makers. Mercat. p.214. ISBN 978-1-8418-3041-4. The band's ninth studio album City of Love was released on 6 March 2020. In February 2021, they released their tenth studio album entitled Riding on the Tide of Love to commercial success in the UK.

The album is burnished with a real sense of optimism, in both the words and the music, the spiritual invocation of rich history urging a people to remake that history.During the COVID-19 pandemic, the band recorded and released their tenth studio album entitled Riding on the Tide of Love which was released in February 2021. The album failed to reach the same level of commercial success in the United Kingdom that the band experienced with their previous album, City of Love, with the album debuting at number 23 on the charts, spending only one week before dropping out of the UK Top 100 album charts. [15] In their native Scotland, the album performed better, debuting at number two and spending additional weeks within the Scottish Top 40 albums charts. [16] It’s actually about waiting to be discovered,” said Ross, “spurred on by the unrequited love of an old girlfriend.”

Ross remains the fulcrum, but McIntosh is integral to When The World Knows Your Name, impelling Deacon Blue into the big time. And while the songs sometimes become submerged in the mix, you have to admire Ross’ chutzpah, though if the album was a calculated attempt to break America, that attempt failed miserably (it didn’t even chart over there).

And so, on Believers, he embarks on “the journey we all take into the dark”, the point in all our lives where, “whatever you’ve been told, whatever the evidence is you’ve been presented with, you just don’t know what the answer is.” Gaels Blue, a 1985 album by the self-styled Bard Of Dundee, singer-songwriter Michael Marra, was the touchstone for Fergus Sings The Blues.A New House, according to Ross, is “about our country, Scotland, a physical sense of a place that I’m sometimes overwhelmed with”. She may have been out of Number 10 for a couple of years, but that didn’t stop Ross venting his anger at Margaret Thatcher on Your Town. To promote the release of the album, the band announced the Riding on the Tide of Love tour which is scheduled to begin in June 2021 in Brighton and concludes on 19 December 2021 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.
