The use of the imagination and emotions in encountering what God has to say to you from his word is gently and easily put. In this chapter the author expresses his inner feelings regarding nuclear war and beautifully presents the Christian approach to nuclear weaponry and warfare.

One of the most widely read and highly acclaimed religious books, God of Surprises takes us on the inner journey, convinced that the treasure is hidden within. Although not recommended by the author I did read straight through it without doing the exercises at the end of each chapter.Hughes finishes by writing on the nature of the growing relationship with Christ one should expect as one becomes more aware of, and able to influence, the orientation of one's desires. It is written especially for bewildered, confused or disillusioned Christians, who have a love-hate relationship with the Church. The earlier Collins Touring Map was fine but the Comprehensive Map was like a Rolls Royce to a Morris Minor to it. Chapter Twelve is not a treatise on decision-making, but offers some basic guidelines for individual and group decisions. At the end of the chapter, the author makes a wonderful comparison between the marks of true repentance vis-à-vis false repentance.

Hughes' premise in this book is that all people, as God's cherished creation, have a treasure hidden inside them, which is their unique identity and relationship with God, through the Holy Spirit. I had a Christian education (Anglican, not Roman Catholic)but Christianity never really 'caught' for me.Slight failures are such that the contents page is not indexed and there are frequent references to 'such-and-such on page 00' which should have been edited as there are no page numbers. A fantastic little book about prayer, our inner lives, and how we grow (taking steps forward and backward) in interacting with God. But he is careful to define that treasure as experienced unity with Christ, a goal any Christian ought to hold. Religion, as it is often presented and understood, not only fails to give importance to the awareness of one’s inner self, but even actively discourages it. It's not a spiritual method of which I am a great fan but this book undoubtedly introduces it well and with great care.
