Audrey Kobayashi is a native of British Columbia, with a B.A. (1976) and M.A. (1978) from the University of British Columbia, and a PhD (1983) at UCLA, and PhD research study (Monbusho Scholarship) at the University of Kyoto (1980−1982); taught in Geography and East Asian Studies at McGill University (1983−1994), then Queen’s University, initially as Director of the Institute of Women’s Studies (1994−1999) and thereafter as Professor of Geography; appointed Queen’s Research Chair in 2005; visiting professorships include the University of British Columbia, University College London, Canterbury University, New Zealand; Fulbright Fellow at the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, DC (1994); elected positions include President of the Canadian Association of Geographers (1999−2001), President of the Association of American Geographers (2010−2011); appointed to the Royal Society of Canada; awards include Lifetime Achievement Awards of the CAG, AAG, and Ethnic Geography Study Group, AAG Presidential Achievement Award, Aspen Institute Scholarship, several teaching awards; over 100 publications and numerous grants, with research focusing on migration, racism, employment equity and human rights, and the history and philosophy of geography.
