Now, Sky finally confirmed to us that House Of The Dragonwill indeed be available in 4K / HDR on Sky Q and Sky Glass, as long as you have the appropriate subscription. In the US (and several other countries), on HBO Max, House Of The Dragonwill be available in 4K and HDR. But HBO Max is not available in the UK (at least not without a VPN), therefore many of its shows air on Sky. Series cinematographer Fabien Wagner famously blamed viewers’ ability to tune their TVs, as well as the compression the episode went through for HBO to broadcast and stream it for the problems. Furthermore, it will not be available in 4K for NOW customers, as the service doesn’t support Ultra HD at all. House of The Dragonis based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Bloodbook, and isset 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

There is very flat and grainy imagery starting at around 26 minutes in Alicent Hightowers bedroom. Likewise, the whole scene when Daemon takes Rhaenyra to a brothel looks even worse than Alicent’s bedroom. This principal cast brings to life the complexities of both the Targaryen dynasty and their own motivations. Thrones had a pretty clear line between its heroes and villains – infamously so for its villains – but Houseis in contrast where all the characters are capable of morally grey actions. As the family splits into two factions, each side has their own valid points for what they do, making the line between good and evil murkier and the cast deliver incredibly well on these layered performances. While the streaming service has previously made movies available for streaming in 4K HDR in HEVC compression, the release of the Game of Thrones prequel marks the first time a new TV show has been available on HBO Max with 3D audio and HDR. HBO Max in Europe has meanwhile confirmed that both GoT and House of the Dragon are now available on HBO Max in 24fps format, with the original series having previously be shown in a converted 25 frames per second with 4% speedup. Much like the first season of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragonis engrossing right from the start with its characters, played by an excellent cast, and its story. Whereas GoTwas a sprawling epic told all across and beyond Westeros featuring many clashing houses, House of the Dragoninstead focuses on the Targaryen family at the height of their power, yet also at a critical time in their rule that will define Westerosi history going forward. There’s also an irony as the show features more of the ‘game of thrones’ than Game of Thronesdid as multiple characters plot, lie and manipulate for more power and a chance to sit on the famed Iron Throne. Update (Aug. 3): Asked for clarification about HBO Max’s feature set on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, an HBO Max spokesperson confirmed to Polygon on Wednesday that the service does not currently support 4K or HDR on PlayStation. We’ve edited the story to reflect this. The ten-episode series will premiere in the UK on Monday, August 22 at 2am– yes, in the middle of the night – simultaneously with its US premiere. Based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel “Fire & Blood,” House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen and is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The environmental and ambient sounds are excellent in this series, with subtleties even in the quietest scenes. One such subtlety can be found in Episode 1 – Chap. 4 when King Viserys is meeting with Otto Hightower and Prince Daemon walks in after a night of executions in the town. You may not have noticed this before but the sounds of falling rain create an immersive effect as if you are in the room with them. But where the imagery is dark it makes up for it in sharpness and richness of detail. Closeups are immaculate and the dynamic range is impressive in most scenes. The dragon effects work has really come a long way since GOT S1, so much so that we may take for granted that dragons are pure fantasy. In the aforementioned article, I said that HDR “has the potential to be the most impactful advancement in TV technology since the introduction of HD resolution and digital television in the [2000s],” while lamenting that “it hasn’t yet reached widespread adoption on the content side or the consumer side.” I also said, in a hopeful note in the article’s conclusion, that “a lot can change in a relatively short period.” And I laid out a path forward for HBO:Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection belongs in a museum Official scripts and lore books are the real prize The features also make a point of how the creatives wanted to showcase the visual style of sets like the Red Keep and the power of the Targaryen dynasty with the architecture being more complex than Game of Thrones. Giant Targaryen statues stand in the throne room while the Iron Throne literally stretches out with more melted down swords or dragon skulls are placed with a religious-like reverence, something much different to the original series.
