About this deal

Known for its relentlessly quotable dialogue - rich with razor-sharp wit and incessant pop culture references - for its iconic characters and unforgettable shots; and for its stunning blend of striking, unflinching violence, and ironic humour; for its non-linear narrative and the distinctive style pervading throughout, Pulp Fiction ushered in a new era of crime dramas, with endless imitators but no equals, even from Tarantino himself.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Pulp Fiction 4K made a big splash. ‘Cool’ filmmaking was once again a possibility. The hushed praise that had been reserved for Martin Scorsese —‘what’s he doing now?’‘Who’s in it?’ turned to speculation about Quentin’s filmic intentions. I was working all night at a video dub house early in 1994, when a flat film-chain transfer of Pulp Fiction was being duplicated. The shop practically shut down, as 20 people gathered around a single 19″ monitor to get a glimpse at the highly-anticipated picture.Pulp Fiction arrives 4K at last, with a freshly remastered scan of the original camera negative, complete with Dolby Vision and standard HDR. speedometer. The rear panel is also red. Center is a milkshake, burger, and juice box, three food and drink items that feature prominently throughout Paramount's SteelBook is glossy and will show some handling fingerprints. The front panel is predominately red at the top where the film's title in The subtle minutia visible in the clothing and facial features among the members of the cast was striking. Grain remains intact, with an even and, primarily filmic essence, that underscores the thematic content. The color range in the film is surprisingly broad and, the rendering of both primary and secondary colors proves gratifying and contrastingly vivid. I also found that fleshtones appeared gradational and quite natural. For those not familiar with the details regarding Ultra HD Blu-ray you can refer to my article that includes some pertinent data on the subject. Here is the link: While Pulp Fiction isn’t a masterpiece of filmmaking as some might contend, it’s still a very well made picture with the sharp writing we expect from Tarantino and one of the better ensemble casts put together.QT wasn’t some crazy rebel filmmaker. He established himself as an old-fashioned auteurist, and demonstrated considerable loyalty to his creative contributors. Co-writer Roger Avary had assisted on Reservoir Dogs . The same went for Tarantino’s ace editrix Sally Menke, producers Lawrence Bender & Richard N. Gladstein, cinematographer Andrzej Sekula, & costumer Betsy Heimann. Siskel & Ebert’s “At the Movies”: The Tarantino Generation (16:00) has the former dynamic critic duo talking about how the writer/director has possibly influenced other filmmakers. Calibrated with Calman color calibration software and Portrait Displays C6 HDR2000 colorimeter from Portrait.com) Jules and Vincent are aggressively straight. Their hilariously mundane conversation may have convinced America’s action film devotees that good dialogue actually makes a difference — Tarantino’s speeches veer between Shakesperian oratory and the best of sitcom bandinage . . . plus the kind of 100-proof profanity that would stop grandma’s heart dead cold.

Pulp Fiction was unlike any other film I had seen at the time. My first reaction to it wasn’t an especially positive one. It wasn’t that I disliked it but, I didn’t care for Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and wasn’t sure what to make of the overtly dark, crass humor, nonlinear storyline, mishmash of elements and period references in this film. Then I watched it again. The second time around I came to fully appreciate Pulp Fiction for the intriguing film noir that it is. The wonderfully crafted narrative revolves around three intersecting storylines that feature Los Angeles based mobsters, small-time crooks, a crooked boxer and a mysterious briefcase. There’s a good selection of extras included, mostly on the Blu-ray, which is the same disc and transfer as old release. We don’t get an audio commentary unfortunately (Tarantino doesn’t seem to be a fan of them, not having done one since the DVD release of Reservoir Dogs), but we do get over 4 hours of extras, including cast interviews, behind the scenes featurettes, critical reaction to the film, marketing materials, and an hour long interview with the man himself. A substantial audience saw Pulp Fiction and Tarantino’s success d’estime was even greater; he was able to build his next picture around an actress who hadn’t been a star since the ’70s and blaxploitation. If the Weinstein scandals haven’t done too much damage to Tarantino, it’s likely because his movie odes to ’70s trash cinema left out those exploitationers’ pervasive sexism — the female characters may not always be well treated, but they aren’t humiliated for cheap laughs or girlie nudity. When somebody gets raped in Pulp Fiction, it’s a guy. Ving Rhames’ Marcellus is the common thread between the stories, a gangster so fearful nobody dares offend him. Jules and Vincent never forget that fact, which makes Vincent’s screwy ‘date assignment’ for their boss all the funnier. Marcellus’ wife Mia wants a fun night out, and Vincent is delegated to entertain her. He’s in double jeopardy — if the frisky Mia tries to seduce him, he’s cooked. Mia is also a sneaky cokehead. Keeping her away from drugs may be impossible.Maynard, Zed and Marsellus, Jimmy (entirely), Fabienne (entirely), and Vincent/Butch and the toaster. If you already have the bluray and are not a fan (per se) then I can image you will be perfectly fine without this new release. Don't misunderstand me: the 4k isn't bad at all, the bluray is just already very good. However only the 4k has the special features mentioned above. Here Are Some Facts on the Fiction (20:37) is a roundtable discussion with some random critics as they talk about why Pulp Fiction stood out and how it stood the test of time (though the panel has its distracter as well).
