About this deal

Inevitably, Batman also ends up finding the next Boy Wonder who will end up facing Dick Grayson in a battle of ego. This is was the moment for him to spread his wings and fly away from his nest to become his own thing. They only recently reprinted Nightwing: Year One in a deluxe edition, only for it to go out of print again too.

Nightwing: Year One is a solid and entertaining origin story revealing Robin's tale of independence and self-discovery.

A lot of great Bat Family moments especially with Dick and Barbara, I love their dynamic in the early years of Gotham before the Excellently written article, if only all bloggers offered the same level of content as you, the internet would be a much better place. Things get back on track in a big way from there as Dick takes on the Nightwing codename, develops a proto new costume and reunites with his old flame Batgirl as he decides to reintroduce himself to the naughtier elements of Gotham. He also wrote the Ruse spin-off Archard's Agents one-shots in January and November '03 and April '04, the last released shortly before CrossGen's complete collapse forced the cancellation of all of its comics, before which Dixon wrote a single issue of Sojourn (May '04).

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I think the idea is to convey Bats as being less pissed at Dick for botching his job and more hurt by the fact that he's spending more time with the Titans than his mentor, but Dixon's Batman isn't actually nuanced enough to get that point across. Dick Grayson becoming Nightwing is a major growth for the character and a memorable moment in the DC Universe. He has contributed well over a thousand scripts to publishers like DC Comics, Marvel, Dark Horse, Hyperion and others featuring a range of characters from Batman to the Simpsons. So, for instance, while you can wedge this story between the pages of New Teen Titans, it very barely lines up with Batman. Lastly, a moment that deserves a brief special mention is when Grayson seeks advice from Superman - the Man of Steel, true to his honorable character, provides guidance and inspiration to the upset and directionless young man, and it was probably the best-written scene in the story. Nightwing: Year One is a storyline written by Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty, with art by Scott McDaniel. I can understand the reasons behind it, but, as mentioned earlier, his partnership (and tensions within the partnership) should have been fleshed out. A guy can't be a Boy Wonder forever," and it seems that everyone understands that, and even Bruce, in the darkest corners of his mind, does too.

Dick Grayson's truly captured in this book as the heroic hot shot charmer that he is, and you see the character begin to come into his own. Exciting and historical, it’s largely Jason versus Dick and Batman’s inexcusable folly, with Dick being a beacon of hope through darkness. Dixon had a few notable artistic collaborators, but none who took to the character and setting with the vigor of Scott McDaniel. And it's a nice touch that, like Ma Kent, Alfred still made Dick's first Nightwing costume, even after he's left the 'Cave.

While that is a fair assessment, it does not take into account the uniqueness that this story holds. Besides that, if you've got access to a decent library of trades and back issues, you can follow Dick's journey from adolescense to manhood like he were a family friend who dressed up in tights and lost his family in a freak circus accident. The heart of the issue though is the eternal Dick Grayson/Barbara Gordon on-again/off-again romance which is off here because Dick is with Starfire, but which Dixon has always written to perfection. Jason comes off as every bit the twerp he was when folks voted with their telephones back in the 80's, but the pairing gives Dick a chance to be both outraged ousted party and cool big brother; by the end, we're as in awe of the newly minted Nightwing as Jason is. This is one of those stories that make you sad that you're finished and, since it's just a graphic novel, you're finished pretty quick. Wally West is the nice guy who plays soccer and everybody likes, but Dick Grayson is the quarterback who also happens to be super-down-to-earth and nice to the nerdy kids; he's Emilio Estevez from The Breakfast Club (that analogy was dedicated equal parts to John Hughes and Sean T.
