About this deal

If there even was a right choice that is, as I did feel that the eventual conclusion of the story wasn't fair to the one character who ended up being by himself. While it was an impossible choice for Emma either way, I also felt that her response was unfair and he (I'm not mentioning any names as to not spoil the ending) didn't deserve such an unhappy ending.

Be prepared for incredibly fraught relationships, desperate moments full of fear and powerlessness, and heartwarming moments that remind us that even though we are only human, we can have the capacity for the greatest understanding and love. Book blurb: "Catherine Hernandez has written a book that will make you feel as though your heart has grown twice the size once you put it down. A Filipina woman's life story is narrated from the perspective of her future unborn fetus in achingly beautiful, lyrical and astonishing prose... An extraordinary portrayal of the powers of chosen families, told with profound pathos, wonderful humour. It is a story of a modern Canadian family and its marvelous incarnations and offers an explosive commentary on the power of acceptance and inclusion as a path towards happiness." by Heather O'Neill. As a writer and a generally thinky person, I’ve spent a lot of my life thinking about the society I live in, and societies in general. I’ve always imagined society as a kind of giant human—a living organism like each of us, only much bigger. The Story of Us is an emotional rollercoaster filled with struggles and triumphs. Most importantly it's a story of mothers, of sacrifice, of found family, of community, and unlikely friendship. I could definitely see this book turned into a stage production, and I cannot wait to see what Catherine Hernandez delivers next. The few flash-forward sections interspersed throughout the book were so cleverly done. Kudos to Atkins for those just-vague-enough snippets which kept me guessing and ultimately led to a conclusion that had me shedding tears. I still could appreciate the baby’s voice in the end and I enjoyed what was this first forays into queer lit for me. They were right. With so many non-controversial topics to write about, why take on something so loaded and risk alienating a ton of readers? I listened to people’s warnings, and I thought about moving on to something else, but then I was like, “Wait what? I live inside a giant and the giant is having a six-year-old meltdown in the grocery store candy section and that’s a not-okay thing for me to talk about?”

I liked that I had absolutely no idea where the story would go, I like to be surprised and I really was, I didn’t expect any of what I read, and it was moving and heartbreaking and wonderful all at the same time. I felt so many emotions reading this book, and Dani Atkins is such a talented writer to be able to stir up and bring out all of these feelings in her characters and her readers too. The Story Of Us is so BEAUTIFULLY written, wow.

Der Verlauf ist zwar etwas vorhersehbar aber mit ganz vielen kleinen, unerwarteten Wendungen weiß man eigentlich doch nicht so Recht wohin das Ganze läuft. Und das emotionale Ende überrascht. The Story of Us is the second book by Dani Atkins. It was first released in the UK last year and is due out in June here in the U.S. Her first book, Then and Always was a completely wonderful book. So I had high expectations for this second one. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Scarborough by Catherine Hernandez was one of my most surprising and memorable reads of 2022, so it'll come as no surprise that The Story of Us was one of my most anticipated reads for 2023. Can I underscore again how much I love Catherine Hernandez's writing? Emotionally affecting, nuanced, presenting a world where things aren't perfect, but people are willing to try to improve it for one another, for their community. Her books fill me with hope and warmth. A story that both encourages me to learn about others unlike me and also comforts me deeply with what I know to be true.

I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher by the thoughts and opinions expressed here are may own. Despite receiving no further renumeration for this review other than the ARC, the publisher requests I also inform the reader of #Paid #Ad #Sponsored.

Wow. I was hoping for something good given how I had fallen in love with Danis first novel and The Story Of Us did not disappoint one bit.

Emma and her two best friends are driving home after her hen night when disaster strikes. In the blink of an eye her blissfully happy life, in which the most stressful part used to be planning her wedding, is completely turned upside down. She barely makes it out of the car alive before it explodes and owes her life to a handsome stranger rescuing her at the risk of his own safety.
