About this deal

And if you have a child, I guarantee you'll be keeping her a little closer to home, that's if you let her out of your sight at all. Erin has personal reasons to want to solve what is happening on the island worrying that her boyfriend, who makes a surprise visit, or his sister, who works at The Retreat, might be involved. Since opening in June 2022, The Retreat has become a vibrant local hub and destination of choice for tourists and businesses from all over the world, and was recently named as Britain's Best Hotel by The Times and the Sunday Times, topping their list of the Top 100 Places to Stay in the UK. Mark Edwards is an author I've been following for years, and I've come to anticipate his certain brand of thrilling and chilling fiction with gusto each year in the release of his latest novel.

The Retreat is a creepy suspense novel with multiple twists and turns making it quite enjoyable for this reader. I defy anyone to read this without pulling the curtains a little tighter, without starting at every little noise. I'll give Edwards this that he definitely keeps his readers guessing as to what the heck is going on!And when someone else drowns in a diving incident, Elin begins to suspect that there’s nothing accidental about these deaths. What he discovers is that several young children have gone missing every 35 years--the most recent being a young orphan girl who went missing in 1980. Just like The Sanatorium, The Retreat tells a twisty, chilling and tense tale in a location so vividly imagined, you feel like you’re there too, among the guests. What I really liked about The Retreat was that I couldn’t figure out what was going on and was surprised by the outcome of what happened to Lily. The Retreat is a heart-pounding, adrenaline-soaked thrill ride, packed with well-drawn characters, settings so real you could touch them, and cliffhangers and twists as belly-flipping as a dive off the fictional island’s Reaper’s Rock.

Either way, it’s crying out for a screen adaptation and provides a welcome, if unsettling, distraction from current events. Thank you to Thomas and Mercer via Netgalley for providing a digital copy of The Retreat by Mark Edwards for review. This year the festival is September 10-17 so if you are anywhere near Devon, please go and report back.

I feel like I am in the minority as someone who actually liked The Sanatorium (although I will admit that the ending did get a little confusing) and liked The Retreat even more. But the biggest problem is that this narrative is framed as a mystery without delivering the pleasures of a mystery. Everyone starts thinking that the house might be haunted after all but Lucas doesn't believe in ghosts or legends. The story has a flow to it, and the present story with a connection to past events was interesting and the very last part is good and I will even say that the epilogue is great.

Instead he not only finds himself investigating the recent disappearance of a child but also uncovering secrets about another child who disappeared 35 years ago, when he and his family still lived in the area. At dinner Will and Farrah say that people should stop being obsessed with the island’s past while Elin says you can’t erase it.At the very beginning, the author plays heavily with “setting as character,” which seemed very apt for this story – but then doesn’t know how to reinforce this in the plot or in the characters’ perception of the place—which is a shame. Our relaxed brasserie, 1772, is named after the year the original house was built, and incorporates the breathtaking Orangery with spectacular views of the North Wessex Downs.
