About this deal

This album is often talked about in the VC so I started streaming it and discovered so much more great music beyond the hits.

Just before Stevie Wonder was supposed to perform, a piece of his sound equipment went missing, and he refused to go on stage. I do not own a ton of DMM (Direct Metal Master) vinyl and I know there has been plenty debate on DMM vs. Pitchfork may earn a portion of sales from products that are purchased through our site as part of our Affiliate Partnerships with retailers. She sings from the point of view of a neighbor hearing a woman screaming in the apartment next door.

Bursting onto the scene in the late 1980s, her brand of acoustic pop-rock was a huge success around the world. Tracy Chapman is best known for her hits 'Fast Car' and 'Give Me One Reason', along with other singles 'Talkin''bout a Revolution', 'Baby Can I Hold You', 'Crossroads', 'New Beginning' and 'Telling Stories'.

Within five years, she would perform it for a television audience of 600 million in a packed Wembley Stadium for Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday benefit concert. By the end of the summer of 1988, a few months after the Nelson Mandela tribute, Tracy Chapman was a platinum album and the singer was a star. Chapman wrote the song in 1983, while she was still a student at Tufts University and busking in Boston for distracted passersby. In addition, if I have checked the box above, I agree to receive such updates and messages about similar artists, products and offers.

At times, the footage of her on stage at Wembley reveals an artist trying to draw as little attention to herself as possible.Talkin’ ‘Bout a Revolution,” the opening song, is arguably the clearest view into Chapman’s political ethos. At a time when some of the Audiophile labels are charging mega bucks for their records, some of which sound pretty poor imo, the sound on this release is nothing short of exceptional. She was already playing ukulele and started writing songs by age 8, took up guitar at 11, and at 14 wrote her first song looking at the troubles in her city. And as she sang with that magnetic calm, she built an atmosphere as intimate as each listener’s childhood bedroom. The acoustic guitars don't sound overly bright, but have the presence there that makes the album great.

In 1988, she performed in London as part of a worldwide concert tour to commemorate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I’m terms of sound quality, it’s very good and underscores that beyond the music itself — and far more critical than format — is the quality of the original recording (mics, placement, the studio/hall) and the mastering. Between verses, she lets the air settle into silence before charging into the dark scene once again. Following a four year hiatus, chapman remerged in 2000 with her fifth album ‘Telling Stories’ which was well received both in the states and Europe, the latter of which chapman’s presence was ever more in demand. With her sensitive, well-crafted narratives and a voice as rich as the Mississippi Delta, Chapman re-introduced nuanced social commentary into pop music. In 2009, she said: "I'm approached by lots of organizations and lots of people who want me to support their various charitable efforts in some way. Over the years it faded into the background in my mind but this vinyl journey has brought music back into my life.
