About this deal

But if this is an example of his short stories and if I were reading Child for the first time, I'd never read another book of his. Fans of Reacher will enjoy the 3 stories, though I would’ve preferred Reacher as a 13 or 16 year old to be less confident and less of a finished product (one always has to suspend belief to read Reacher, but even more so for these tales of a young Reacher). The summer heat is suffocating, fires are raging in the Bronx, the city is bankrupt, and the mad gunman known as Son of Sam is still on the loose. Someone is leaking information from a Congressional investigation into whether the Army and Marines need a new, super-cutting-edge sniper rifle.

The second and third stories give readers a glimpse of Reacher as a 13-year old and as a 16-year-old—all "superpowers" already present. According to his bosses, it's a zero-danger mission, but Reacher knows that things are rarely what they seem. The cover incorporates a nice set of complements with the bright royal blue sky background and the slightly subdued orange in the author's name and the title. This time a young 16 year old Reacher is in New York City on his way to visit his brother at West Point. But I can't, there is something wrong in his books and I'll try to explain it to the best of my abilities as a simple reader. Best yet, the book includes a fantastic Reacher fight scene (don't get me wrong, I love it when he uses his brain, but the last two short stories I listened to didn't have a lot of action.

The opening of the book cuts quickly, and multiple times, between Jack Reacher's point of view and two other points-of-view -- a nameless jogger, and a motorist -- solely to set up the accidental death of the jogger, a character the reader cannot, as she is nameless, yet be invested in. In Sunlight or In Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper (December 2016) Lee’s story is “The Truth About What Happened” based on the painting “Hotel Lobby” (1943). Given that it was a short story, the first half of the story was set up along with a gratuitous stalking of a woman jogging culminating in her death at the hands of a baddie we never meet. Don't get me wrong - it's a good formula: Lee Child is brilliant at setting up scenes that suck you in with the level of apparently innocuous detail that then lead on to something more significant.Whether the suspect is the guilty party, or this is just a red herring, surely this should at least be remarked on by someone of Jack Reacher's implied skill. I liked how Child informed us of Reacher's character with his mouthing off to Christopher, his observational skills in figuring out what Christopher's hand movements mean.
