About this deal

A chilling story that builds and twists and expands and still manages to end with all its threads drawn together.

What Moves the Dead Review: Delicate, Atmospheric, and

Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all. The gothic descriptions and use of imagery was phenomenal. Had I not known this was a book to be released this year I would have thought it was a book written 100 years ago.

Marketing Plan

A grotesque romp! It takes up residence beneath your skin and refuses to leave.”—Caitlin Starling, USA Today bestselling author of The Death of Jane Lawrence Kingfisher, the award-winning author of The Twisted Ones, comes What Moves the Dead, a gripping and atmospheric retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic “The Fall of the House of Usher.” What is the summary of City of the Dead? This is such a good book! Be prepared for a slow creep. All the hares, so much fungus, Gallaecian pronouns, and Beatrix Potter's aunt come together to make a phenomenal read. Recommended for people who like: speculative fiction, sci-fi, Edgar Allen Poe, atmospheric reads, creepy, mushrooms, The Southern Reach Trilogy, The Fall of the House of Usher Obliviously Evil: The tarn doesn't realize it's doing anything wrong, but unfortunately, without ever meaning to hurt anyone it could assimilate the entire human race, and there's no safe way to explain why this would be bad.

Book Review: ‘What Moves the Dead’ is an Eerie, Scientific

It is often said we fear what we do not understand. Myths and stories of ghosts and fairies often arose out of strange happenings science would later explain away, and while often we discover it wasn’t witches that killed the crops or poisoned the town we also sometimes find that nature can be just as frightening as the scapegoated specters.WhatMovestheDead digital marketing campaign, including author guest posts, social media promotions, targeted These new novels—increasingly common in horror—cast off or ignore developmental mainstays that were indispensable ten or fifteen years ago. They don’t care to be deeply original, possess a complex plot, or even be memorable beyond a few starred. They prize social commentary, both with and without qualifications, and sharp, silky prose. These books are filled with two types of characters: the intriguing mains, capable engines all, and shallower figures that these paragons play off of. What Moves the Dead” by T. Kingfisher is all kinds of morbid, unsettling, and downright creepy. The tale is a modern reimagining of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” that further develops the original themes and ideas to create something that is even more terrifying and messed up. Fans of Kingfisher and those who enjoy snuggling up with a good horror will not be disappointed by this riveting read! Do not skip the author’s note if you want to know more about how and why this retelling was born! I’m so glad she decided to complete this novella! I loved it!

What Moves The Dead by T. Kingfisher | Waterstones

For fans of Mexican Gothic and Edgar Allan Poe, this is definitely a retelling that you do not want to miss. The mushroom’s gills were the deep-red color of severed muscle, the almost-violet shade that contrasts so dreadfully with the pale pink of viscera. I had seen it any number of times in dead deer and dying soldiers, but it startled me to see it here. Wonderful characters, more fully fleshed as a novelization, with the same madness elicited by Poe’s writing. There was definite inspiration from Poe and love how the author was able to really expand to create this eerie tale.
