To return beavers to an urban setting for the first time in over 400 years for their intrinsic value to nature. A licence has been granted by Natural England to reintroduce Eurasian beavers to Ealing in a controlled enclosure trial at Paradise Fields in North Greenford. This is a joint project between Ealing Wildlife Group (EWG), Ealing Council, Citizen Zoo and Friends of Horsenden Hill and supported by experts at the Beaver Trust.A battle, led by Nel and supported by Viv and the rest of the villagers begin. It seems that the battle will involve the stranger, who is now introduced as Jake, and not in a good way. Nel would like to think that Jake is on the side of the village, but so many incidents make it clear that he is not. Nel fights up to the eleventh hour when it looks as though she has finally run out of time and money to save her beloved Paradise Fields. There is don’t worry, Natural England were very thorough! And it’s okay if it is a little crazy, all the best things are. People thought airplanes were crazy at one time, crazy ( although I prefer innovative, brave, forward thinking, courageous, ground-breaking, cutting edge, and audacious but I digress) is what moves the world forward. A wise man once said “If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.” ― David Bowie Since then, they have been released in Forty Hall Farm, on the outskirts of north London, and in projects in Hampshire, Devon and Cumbria. Across Europe and North America, beavers are known to thrive alongside urban communities. Bringing a range of benefits from increasing the resilience to the challenges of climate breakdown and enriching people’s daily lives, as they encounter these magnificent mammals in their local greenspaces. Here we Elliot Newton, co-founder of Citizen Zoo welcomed the beaver licence approval and funding announcement, commenting:

Thank goodness for Katie Fforde, the perfect author to bring comfort in difficult times. She really is the queen of uplifting, feel good romance.' AJ PEARCE The demand for beaver meat, fur and the secretion from a small gland used for perfume and pain relief meant they were hunted to the point of their disappearance in the 16th century.Learn to manage beavers in the urban context including monitoring flood mitigation effects in an urban catchment Paradise Fields, promised to the hospice by her good friend Sir Gerald, is the perfect place for the farmers’ market for locals to sell their wares and to raise money and awareness of the local hospice. She is in a comfortable (safe? boring?) relationship with a local realtor, Simon. Her two sons are at university and her daughter is nearly there. She owns her own home and has her dear friend, Viv, to advise (nag?) her about her very unexciting but predictable life.

A total of 116 hectares of land across London will benefit from rewilding projects including woodland restoration and a Pollinator Corridor in which bees can thrive. But who can she trust to help her save Paradise Fields? Her sensible boyfriend Simon? Her friends, Sacha and Vivien? Or Jake, the devilishly handsome man who kissed her under the mistletoe... My first Katie Fforde book and my overall feeling towards it is that it is SO dull. The main character is about 42 as far as I can tell but seems to have the characteristics of an 80 year old e.g. she is too old to send a text message and at one point is resigning herself to a life of solitude with her grandchildren who haven't even been born yet(???). If I behave like that in the next 5 years or so someone please tell me to get my act together and stop behaving like a pensioner. Nel’s life gets turned upside down when she receives a kiss from a stranger at the farmers’ market. Of course, she was selling mistletoe; so that would surely explain it. But the stranger keeps coming in and out of her life at the oddest times and that is how she finds out that her beloved Paradise Fields is being taken over by Sir Gerald’s son and his flashy American wife and their plans do not include anything that would benefit the children’s hospice.A beautiful area of ancient woodland, grassland, ponds and hedgerows, that provides an opportunity to experience nature and escape from city life. On the southern side of the canal lies Paradise Fields comprising scrapes, reed beds and lagoons offering a peaceful haven for wildlife and visitors alike. Many people assume beavers are a wilderness species, when in fact we’ve just forgotten how closely we used to live alongside them. We’re so excited to study how beavers interact with an urban river catchment and, crucially, with urban communities. Beavers are a keystone species, manipulating habitat to create biodiverse wetlands where many other species can thrive. Their activities can help combat and adapt to impacts of climate change through carbon capture, reduce flood risk by slowing water flow in times of high rainfall and mitigate drought by holding more water on the land.” The project is a collaboration between Ealing Wildlife Group, Citizen Zoo, Friends of Horsenden Hill and Ealing Council with support from Beaver Trust. Its core objectives will be: The works on Paradise Fields are currently centred on a new fence around the habitat, which the beavers are trusted to make homely by themselves.

There Are Plans To Reintroduce Wild Beavers To Ealing

Conservationists hope to build on the success of other beaver reintroduction projects across the UK by using the animals’ supreme dam-building skills to protect against urban flooding, while creating diverse wetland habitats. Beavers a 'refuge for other wildlife' I think this is perhaps my fav KF and I needed a book version of a warm hug this week. This is when the plot is tight, the elements are all in line and it flows really well. Definately, the winning formula at work. But when her old friend and owner of Paradise Fields dies, she knows she must fight to save the meadow and market she loves so dearly.Beavers are to be introduced into urban London for the first time since they were hunted to extinction 400 years ago. Water voles, for example, can use the dams and lodges beavers create to escape predators of their own. An alliance of conservationists are turning Paradise Fields, a 10-hectare wetland in Ealing, west London, into an ‘immersive beaver landscape’ set to open later this year.
